Ah yes, back to the Bears game for a minute; damn right I’m going to enjoy this one. It was a really nice win, no doubt, but the real question… is this a building block for the immediate future? Will this win kickstart the Bears on a winning path, at least more wins than losses, going forward? This year, next year? Let’s not get too deep here; let’s not spend too much time thinking about this. We’ll know something as early as this Sunday, when the Bears visit the Cowboys. Will all those great feelings be washed away?
Let’s start with the defense; they were great vs the Pats. The Pats got a little boost when Zappe came in, but that got snuffed out quick. QB controversy in New England? Who cares. Is either one that great? How much stock can we put in this performance by the defense? Well, they have been doing pretty well, including some impressive 2nd half performances, including shutting the Pats out the last two quarters of this one. Other than getting rolled over on the ground for a couple games, the defense has been pretty solid. Roquan… um, are we going to pay the guy his money, or are we just going to sit around and watch the price tag go up and up? The dude needs to be here, point blank. If we are building something of worth, certainly a guy like Roquan needs to be part of that. If we’re just F-ing around, then fine, let him go, and try to replace him with Joe Schmoe. Lock him up. The couple picks by our rookies were very nice. For all the talk about Ryan Poles, I have to say… those 2 guys look really good; they’re playing all the time, which is great. They’re only going to get better, one would think. Speaking of draft picks, the dude on the OL looks halfway decent too. For him to be starting says a lot… sure, maybe it speaks to the talent level on our OL, but maybe we found something in the 5th round too. With Jaylon, and a better Eddie in the secondary with those rooks, I’m feeling pretty good.
Of course, the biggest focus is Justin Fields, as far as, how our future will shape up. And yes, we know he needs weapons, outside of the RBs I’m assuming. The Bears’ ground game has been damn impressive, and you know what? Keep doing it until they stop you; if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The OL seems to perform a whole hell of a lot better in the run blocking category, so just as the offense should be tailored around #1’s strengths, how about using the best abilities of our OL? Makes sense to me. Fields is part of that ground game, some planned, some unplanned. I love to see Fields flying around down the field, yet, it scares me too. It’s bad enough the refs don’t give a shit when he gets mangled after a play. Guys see that, they’re going to want to take shots at him downfield too. It has to be a balance no doubt; don’t want Justin taking a ton of punishment. Still, his legs provide a whole other dimension for our offense; his arm ain’t half bad either. My biggest gripe is when he holds on to the ball too long, and takes an unnecessary sack; that fumble where he kneed it out of his own hands was scary too. He’s still learning; he’s still getting better. I think if we’re patient with him, and the coaching staff calling the plays, and the GM building up the weapons, we may be nicely surprised. How patient? Well, that’s another story…
Now that we’ve seen the best this Bears team has to offer on Monday night, we want more, and we want it now. With the NFL, especially the NFC turned upside down, why can’t this “bad team” move towards the top? Why just stop after one nice win? Let’s keep it going. After all, we know the Cowboys are perennially the most overrated team in the NFL… let’s get one in Dallas now. Don’t stop now boys… Bear Down!!!
