October 26, 2014: Baseball priorities

What has happened to baseball in our country?  This World Series has extremely low TV ratings, including the lowest rated Game 1 in history.  It’s on its way to becoming the lowest rated series in history.   I can’t believe more people are not interested in the Fall Classic.

I guess it’s been happening for a while now.  The NFL is king and dwarfs everything else; that’s one of the problems.  Others talk about baseball games being too long, too boring, etc…  For me, there’s not a much better way to spend an afternoon than at a ballgame.  Then most people are probably not interested in watching a series between Kansas City and San Francisco.  For me, I had my own reasons why I hadn’t been watching the World Series in previous years, and I have them this year too.

I haven’t been watching the World Series for the past few years.  The reason for this is because of my own personal dead zone that is being a Cubs fan.  Since the Cubs have not sniffed the World Series since 2008, the last year they made the playoffs, I have not been interested.  I’ve been shutting it down for baseball at the end of the 162 game season.  This year is the first year in a while I’ve really been into the playoffs.  With the Cubs on the verge of returning to relevance, I’m all of a sudden more interested in the playoffs and World Series.  That being said, I still haven’t watched any of Game 3 or Game 4.

I love baseball… I really enjoy it.  It doesn’t take too long for me.  It’s not boring.  I would go to each of the 162 Cubs games each year if I could, and not be bored.  When news broke about Joe Maddon opting out of his contract and the Cubs being a possible landing spot, I was 110% back into baseball.  Baseball is an all-year round sport for me to follow.  I enjoy the morning show on the Score every Saturday as I drive my son to the zoo.  I’ll enjoy watching MLB network even in the off-season, but… the Bears, Bulls, & Blackhawks are awesome too, and they get my attention as well.  So with all the Chicago sports teams at the top of my priority list, a baseball game between Kansas City and San Fran comes in next.  It wouldn’t make the list at all if it wasn’t the World Series.

I will be watching some of Game 5 tonight.  With the series tied at 2-2, it’s turning out to be a great series.  I think it’s going 7.  If it does, that game will have very high ratings.  That coupled with the higher ratings Game 6 will command will save this series from becoming the least watched.  I too will be glued to the tube then, that is, if there’s not a Bulls or Blackhawks game that night… that is, before I head to my son’s room to play.  I love baseball, and am back into the World Series, but it has its place.  It will stay in that place until the Cubs make it there… then an act of God couldn’t keep me away.

I’ve watched most of the baseball playoffs and World Series, but then again I always do. It doesn’t matter who’s playing for me; baseball is the best game in my opinion. Pitch by pitch drama and no time limit. Its never over until the last out.
Unfortunately I don’t think its violent enough for today’s Americans. Easy for me to say I guess as I have very little interest in NFL football. Cowboys are looking good, but it doesn’t make my heart pump like Saturday afternoons.
The Irish played great, even in a loss. Outplayed FSU everywhere but the scoreboard. Peyton Manning runs the controversial play every week with no call and so does everybody else in college and the NFL that plays the spread. Peyton runs 4 wide and 1 underneath and the other 3 aren’t USUALLY looking for the ball either. Contact is allowed for 5 yards. Not to mention FSU taking their helmets off immediately after the play to bitch at each other which is a 15 yard penalty in college. Offsetting, replay the down. Refs missed that one and apologized to Kelly after the game. No doubt the Irish could have made it look a little better, cause Robinson was going to be open by 10 yards no matter what.
No big deal. Irish just need to win out and they’ll be in position for the playoff. All the other teams in the top 10 go head to head and somebody has to lose. Mississippi State is the most recent casualty losing to #24 LSU 10-7.
    GO IRISH!
