October 23, 2014: The Hate Files XII

posted in: Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox | 5

With the Bears season going like it’s going, I begin to really hate other teams… more than normal… especially teams that are winning.  It’s in my DNA to hate the Packers, that’s a constant.  Nowadays, there are many other teams that could fit this mold.

I’m not a fan of the Broncos or Seahawks, the Super Bowl contestants last year.  I’m not a fan of the Patriots either, although I was rooting for them against St. Louis in the Super Bowl back in the day.  As I look at all the other teams in the NFL, I ask myself, who do I hate the 2nd most?

It’s easy to look inside our division.  I do not like the Detroit Lions, except they’ve never been good (well, they kind of are this year, but it’s early).  Even when they were OK back in the day, it was hard to hate Barry Sanders, even when he made that one Bears defender look lost on one of his highlight reel runs; he did that to a lot of people.  Same kind of thing goes for the Minnesota Vikings, although they’ve had more recent success than the Lions.  I didn’t like Tommy Kramer and Anthony Carter too much, and I wasn’t a fan of Culpepper or Moss.  I was happy when Atlanta beat them in the playoffs that year.  Yeah, I don’t like those teams, but with 0 Super Bowl wins combined, they don’t bring out the hate.

There’s one other team that makes me want to barf.  I guess they hold the title of the team I hate the 2nd most in the NFL: the Dallas Cowboys.  Each game they win this year, makes me hate them more.  I’ve never liked them, but I didn’t used to hate them.  It was hard to hate them when my first memory of any feelings towards the Cowboys was the game in 1985.  How could I hate this team that we just drubbed 44-0?

An end of an era I guess you could say.  After going to the Super Bowl 5 times in the 70s led by all-American QB Roger Staubach, this team was tagged with the name America’s Team.  I never knew that team.  I still don’t know that team.  Why does that tag stick with the Cowboys?  They are far from it.  In fact, that’s one reason I hate them.  Question for you Dallas Cowboys fans, who was America’s Team in 1985?

Yeah, so CSN Chicago played a special on that game last night, and brought back some great memories.  I knew it was a big deal when it happened, but I don’t know how big a deal it was.  Looking back, it’s even more satisfying to see what we did to that team 29 years ago in one of the most memorable games in Bears history.  We stamped the ever-loving crap out of “America’s Team”.  I think the Bears took that insult personally too.  Why is this team, THIS Dallas Cowboys team called America’s Team?  Yeah, we got something for them… and they did.  Knocking Danny White out of the game twice, scaring the beejezus out of Tony Dorsett, and making Tom Landry contemplate retirement… yeah, that was sweet.  In fact, Danny White ended up having surgery because of what Otis did to him in that one.  America’s Team was officially put to rest forever… or so it should have been.

Yet, people continue to want to give them that tag.  Outside of a good run in the early 90s… really good run of 3 Super Bowls, they haven’t done crap.  I didn’t like that team either.  With Michael Irvin snorting lines of coke from Troy AIkman’s thighs, yeah, this sure was America’s Team.  Let’s just say I wasn’t shedding any tears when Aikman had concussion after concussion, and although I wasn’t cheering like the Philly fans, I wasn’t devastated when Irvin got carted off the field in Veterans Stadium either.  Emmitt Smith eventually breaking Walter Payton’s record upset me too, although Emmitt did pay a ton of respect to who he still regards as the greatest RB of all time, and for that, I don’t hate him.  Who could like that hillbilly of a coach they had in Jimmy Johnson… screaming How bout them Cowboys?  That 90s Cowboys team didn’t get an ounce of my love.  I don’t think I ever rooted for the Cowboys.. oh wait, except when they played the Packers.

This team gets probably the most band wagon fans in America, so if that’s the definition of America’s Team, then maybe that holds true.  When you’re good, that happens; you get a lot of band wagoners.  How does one become a Cowboy fan, besides the people of Texas of course?  For that matter, how does anyone become a Packer fan outside of Wisconsin?  I guess that’s something I’ll just never get.  I’ve liked other teams and players over the years and I root for other teams in certain scenarios, but have never called myself, or considered myself “a fan” of any other team than the teams playing in my city.  I guess if you don’t have a team in your city, that could be excused.  I guess teams like the Braves and Cubs in baseball who have had national TV exposure get a larger than normal fan base.  I mean, to cheer for one team is one thing… to like another team more than your hometown team is something totally foreign to me… but that’s what makes this world go round.

So yeah, the NFL team after the Packers that I hate the most is the Cowboys.  With all the hype EVERY SINGLE YEAR around this team, and NO results in 20 years… With their owner throwing around money, and STILL failing… With all the underperforming “stars” that fill this team every year… The Cowboys are THE most overhyped team in professional sports next to the Yankees.  I get sick of hearing the hype; I get happy when they fail every year.  I’m still waiting this year, but I know it will happen… eventually.  I hate them regardless, and have thorougly enjoyed the Bears beating them down the past few matchups.  I enjoy the 44-0 game even more now that I really know the Cowboys.  I guess they’re just a team that you love to hate; at least they’re a team that I love to hate.  America’s Team?  My ass.

My NFL hate file consists of:
1 Green Bay ( I like their Cheese)
2 St. Louis (b/c I hate everything from there)
3 Oakland Raiders (biggest bad boy franchise to win nothing, bunch of losers)

I can put up with Dallas, even though “America’s Team” is REALLY over rated. Romo is going to blow it, Vegas has odds on that now. Dez, is gonna fight someone and that defense is just horrible.

Just saying…other than that, they are cool…

The Raiders need to find their identity. Are they a run 1st, or pass? Who is their starting RB. Can they draft a franchise QB. As for free agents, who wants to move to Oakland? Simply fixes,
        1. Move back to LA (more $, better FA)
        2. Hire a new GM and replace the entire coaching staff.
        3. Leave the whole “bad boy” mentally behind and focus on the basics

Sorry buddy, its going to take a long time to fix the Raiders , especially when everyone knows what’s wrong with them, but no one has the testicular fortitude to fix it.

I agree with some of your points, the biggest issue today is that Al Davis (RIP) did not have a plan in place after his passing he never groomed his only son to take over the franchise and from what people within the organazation have been quoted has saying is that he treated his son like a POS belittling him in front of the staff asking him one time what he thought the Raiders needed to take in the draft when he answered a WR Big Al answered back WTF do you know and to get the Fk out the room. The ironic thing his that WR would have been Megatron instead of Al’s pick, Lazy POS Purple Drinking Jalwalrus Russell. Long story short Mark Davis needs to sell the team who then would move them out of that Septic tank city of Oakland back to LA and into a new Stadium LA richly deserves!

The tag “America’s Team” is overhyped just like the saying, “everything is bigger in Texas.” I liked watching the 90s cowboys, especially #22. As for nowadays, there is nothing to like or hate. They are just another team that the Bears need to beat. Everyone is predicting a collapse for the cowboys and I am one of them. They seem to be overachieving…Romo not self destructing, Murray still healthy, no Dez blowups…something has to give. All I am concerned about is Thursday, December 4th, in Solider Field, when the cowgirls come to Chicago to get their yearly spanking, just as they have the last 3 times they’ve played. Bend over cowgirls!
