It’s how we always begin talking about the Cubs. We always have to throw that “if” in there; it’s the cautious approach we take. It’s almost like covering ourselves emotionally if they don’t win. We are this way because they never have won. Will that all change this Saturday?
There are still plenty of people around that were alive back in 1945. 71 years isn’t quite as bad as 108. Yet, to mention the words Cubs and World Series in the same sentence, has been more of a sick punch line than anything. It reminds us of our futility; it reminds us of our painful history. The Cubs in the World Series? Yeah, right… only in the movies…. and our dreams.
Saturday night will bring us Game 6 of the NLCS, with the Cubs leading the series 3-2. Imagine the excitement inside of Wrigley Field, in the bars around Wrigley and throughout the city, and on couches in houses all over the country. I remember being this excited before… and it was only 13 years ago.
I hate to talk about it, because it was the lowest point for me as a Cubs fan. I hate to even bring it up now, but it is unavoidable. I won’t be the only person to mention it. We will be reminded of that moment for the next 2 days. The media will be replaying that fateful evening over and over. We will be reminded of that game by all the Cubs haters; those people who hate the Cubs and want to see them lose. So many of those people exist in our own city. It should come as no surprise. That IS our history. THAT is what they hold on to. That is what we try to forget. There will be only one way to put that truly behind us.

Yes, obviously none of these Cubs were on that 2003 team. Heck, some were barely becoming teenagers. Does what happens on the field Saturday night have anything to do with any previous Cubs team that has failed? No. Yet, we feel an extraordinary amount of pressure, anxiety, nerves, as fans; just because THIS team has never been this close doesn’t mean that we haven’t. How great is the pressure that THIS Cubs team will feel come Saturday? If any of that pressure comes from the 40K plus in attendance, they will feel it.
They will feel it because it IS a big stage. Saturday will become the biggest game of their lives. It will become OUR new biggest moment as fans. Will we witness history…new history? We certainly do not want history repeating itself. I’m aware of the history…. we’re very aware of what has taken place in every past year that the Cubs have been in the playoffs. This year IS different. It sure as hell feels like it is.
Confidence? Yeah, I have some of that. I think this Cubs team has a whole hell of a lot of that. Why not? They shouldn’t because of what happened years ago? No, I’m sorry. That doesn’t play… not THIS year. Still, the nerves are still there. We are ultra sensitive now… cheering our team harder than we ever have… defending them… scoffing at history… hoping… hoping to see something we have never seen before. We hope that what we see… what we’ve seen this year… continues to play out on the field.
I’m going to try to get some things done between now and then, but talk about futile efforts. It’s Cubs on the brain in a big way right now. There’s excitement, anticipation, impatience, anxiety, fear, confidence; we are a ball of emotions. OK, at least I am. What time is it? I have to wait like this another 33 more hours? That’s nothing compared to the 71 years some people have waited to see the Cubs in the World Series again. Yes, I said it; Cubs and World Series in the same sentence. And you know what? It sounds good. It sounds right. Now, it’s up to the players to make this dream come true. Oh yeah, and IF that happens, we’ll be asking for 4 more wins; just throwing it out there. We just can’t get there and stop. But… one thing at a time… one win at a time. That’s all we need to finally get to those last baseball games of the year. I’m ready to see it. Let’s Go Cubs!!!

Talk about an emotional roller coaster…oh boy, that is an understatement. If…what a qualifier! Used by Cubs fans like “wait til next year.” If they win, if this, if that…F that! History and past losses come flooding back like you cannot imagine, especially that 03 playoff run because it is the closest the Cubs have been since then. We have talked about this before. Cubs fans are programmed to doubt. We are programmed to not only think the worst but to expect it. There is no way around any of this. The Cubs and Cubs nation have been buried in 108 years of losing…big games, normal games, close games, blowouts…a lot of losses! These last 2 years have brought the Cubs back from the dead…again! They got to the nlcs last year and got swept. They are back this year and are 1 W away from getting back to the World Series for the 1st time in 71 years…think about that! 71 damn years since even being able to play for the biggest prize in baseball. WOW! But the Cubs are alive and well. Cubs nation is on the edge of their collective seats…waiting, fearing, hoping, believing! Is this really going to happen? Can the Cubs finally breakthrough? Will fans under 72 see something they have never seen before? We will find out this weekend. A W gets the Cubs there, 5 more Ws get the Cubs out of their 108 year grave and on top of the baseball world! Who’s ready? I know I sure as hell am! One game at a time Cubbies, and that next game is Saturday night. Make it happen…make history!
GO CUBS GO!!!

Cubs keys to tonite:
Swing the bats. Try not to let all of the good pitches go by. You know the curve is gonna come, and he doesn’t walk many. At least try to put it in play. Good things happen when you actually HIT the ball!
Play good ‘D’ behind your pitcher(s).
If you faster guys get to 2nd, at least make an attempt to steal 3rd.
