October 22, 2014: The 110th

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 2

Last night began the 110th World Series.  When I hear that it reminds me of another number… the number of years since the Cubs have won a World Series, which is almost the same number of years that the World Series has been around.

Man to be alive in the early 1900s…  This is when the Chicago teams dominated baseball.  Starting in 1903, the World Series began with a Boston Americans victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, and after no Series in 1904, the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Athletics in 1905.  The next 3 World Series champions came from Chicago.  The White Sox won in 1906, while the Cubs repeated (imagine that) in 1907 & 1908.  Talk about peaking early…  And that as we say was that…  The Cubs will try to end their World Series victory drought next year in the 111th Annual Fall Classic which would be a span of 107 years since they’ve last won.

True or False:  Only 7 teams have been to more World Series’ than the Cubs.  Well, since I’m mentioning it, it must be true.  With 10 World Series appearances, with the last one coming in 1945, the Cubs trail only the Yankees, Giants, Cardinals, Dodgers, Athletics, Red Sox, and Tigers.  The Cubs even have more World Series appearances than the Braves… that just seems impossible.  With a 20% winning percentage in the Series, the Cubs have really failed to take advantage of their opportunities.  The Sox on the other hand are 3 out of 5.  Yes, they’ve made only half the number of World Series’ as the Cubs, but they’ve won one more…. the only one most of us remember back in 2005.  The Sox actually hold bragging rights over the Cubs in another area, since they beat the Cubs in the World Series back in 1906.  Can you imagine the Cubs White Sox World Series nowadays?  Call in the National Guard…

Any way you cut it, 5 World Series titles among the Cubs and the Sox in 110 World Series opportunities is pathetic.  You would think that since we have 2 teams in the same city/state double our chances, which techinically it does, but again, no results.  Teams located in the same state have met a total of 20 times in the World Series.  The Cubs and Sox, Royals and Cardinals have each met once.  The California teams met a total of 5 times:  Oakland and Los Angeles twice, Oakland and San Franciso once, and Anaheim and San Francisco once back in 2002 which was the last time this has happened.  The other 14 times involved the Yankees, go figure.  They faced off against the New York Giants 6 times, the Brooklyn Dodgers 7 times, and the New York Mets once.

The only other year the World Series was cancelled other than 1904 was 1994.  Sox fans may remember that year.  That could have been a World Series title for the Sox; they had a great team that year.  Of course that would happen to Chicago…  not only do we blow our own chances, we had one taken away.  I wonder if we would have won the one back in 1904…

OK back to the present…  San Francisco put the smack down on Kansas City in Game 1.  Either team looking to acquire James Shields in the offseason saw an ugly performance from “Big Game James”, which didn’t turn out so true…  On the other side of that matchup was the only true ace in this series:  Madison Baumgarner.  He has been awesome.  No Lincecum, No Cain, No problem…  It’s great to just have ace after ace come up in your rotation; it’s no wonder the Giants are playing in their 3rd World Series in 5 years.  This is why I’m rooting against them.  Any team that wins too much bothers me.  On the flip side, any team that is experiencing a long drought, and hasn’t experienced a lot of World Series success, I’m rooting for.  Living here in Chicago, I can relate.  Being a Cubs fan, I can relate more.

Once in the past 55 years has a Chicago team made the World Series.  Once in most of our lifetimes have we seen one of our teams play in the Fall Classic.  That is way too little.  I figure I have about 55 years left in my life, while my son’s life is just beginning.  You’d have to figure we’d make it back more than once in that time frame.  I can only hope my son sees more World Series than I have… Come on guys…

Being a Cubs fan is very hard during this time of year. Watching 2 teams battling it out to see who is truly the best. The world series is where dormant heroes are re-born and each year a new un-noticed player emerges to the front line to try and carry their team to victory. Each game I watch makes is easier to drink another beer, light up another smoke, and even finish off another bag of chips. Just stop watching, as my wife would say….are you NUTS!

I love baseball, especially playoff baseball, I think it’s the best sport on earth, but it’s the one sport that is going to end up killing me. If the CUBS keep losing and never making it to the show, I’ll die of depression, if they win it all, I think I’ll have a heart attack. (let’s hope for the heart attack, lol)

Post season baseball. Nothing better! Pitch by pitch and no time limit. The defense has the ball and controls the game. The longer it takes sometimes the better it is. You can keep all things NFL until mid November, the drama and suspense is not even close.
One day maybe Mo. One day.
