October 21, 2016: Stars of the Game

posted in: Cubs | 1

It’s 10 minutes from Hollywood.  Dodger Stadium sits right off of Sunset, a short drive… nobody walks in LA… from Hollywood.  It was the site of the NLCS Game 5, and the stars were shining.  It was the biggest stage thus far, and we are now seeing who the biggest stars are.

Let’s start with the starting pitcher.  If you care to look through the history of this blog, I got on him a bit the year before for his sub-par performance.  This year was a different story.  He’s been the man all year.  He’s been the man this postseason.  He was the man again tonight.  I love how these teams try to rattle him with the bunting and the dancing on the base paths.  Honestly, I’m surprised they just don’t take the bag; I know he’s quick to home, and Ross can still throw, but with that lead and jump.  It added up to all talk for the Dodgers.  They talked a game that they thought would rattle Lester, but they didn’t execute.  Let’s be honest; not many teams have this year against Lester.  He was phenomenal tonight when we needed him most.  Here’s hoping we’ll see him two more times before it’s all said and done.

Moving along to the guy who is having a coming out party thus far.  Javier Baez is the man.  If you care to look back through the history of this blog, I think I was OK with trading him; no, wait… I don’t think I was… really.  I believe I always wanted to keep him; now I’m going to have to check myself.  Anyways, let’s be glad he didn’t go anywhere.  I remember his first big league game.  It was against Colorado; the family and I were headed to Rainbow Cone.  Yet, I tried to catch his every at bat on the radio.  Yes, he went deep in that first game; he then proceeded to strike out at an alarming rate.  Yeah, that doesn’t seem to be that big of a problem any more.  The kid can flat out rake.  The kid can flat out play defense.  He is an all around stud, and he’s been leading the Cubs this postseason.  I got scared when he pulled up lame in the 8th; thankfully, he was OK.  This kid continues to impress, and you know what, the best is yet to come.

On to the 3rd star of the game to borrow some hockey terminology, it’s Addison.  I talked about how we couldn’t win without Rizzo; he’s back now.  Russell was the next important guy to get going, and he’s going.  He hit the go ahead 2 run homer, a no doubter, to straight away center.  He flung that bat; he knew, we all did.  It was the best moment of the game.  My favorite part about that, was when the 22 year old Russell touched home plate, and high fived the 23 year old Baez.  I thought… there’s the Cubs middle infield for the next decade… and I smiled.  We still got some work to do this year…

The Cubs sit 1 win from advancing to the World Series, and 5 wins from winning it all.  Where will you be Saturday night?  It won’t be easy to focus on anything else until then.  A guy named Kershaw stands in our way.  A guy who shut us down in Game 2 at Wrigley.  Just remember, the Dodgers only got 3 hits that game too.  I expect a big game from Kyle.  I expect us to get on the board against Clayton.  Will it be enough for my eyes to see something I have never seen?  I sure hope so.  I’m ready.  Get ready to rock Wrigley.  Bring it home boys!  Let’s go Cubs!!!

W!!!!!! That is 6 exclamation points for 6 Cubs Ws this postseason with 5 to go, and none was bigger than game 5 last night in la. What a game! What a W! One more takes the Cubs and Cub nation somewhere it hasnt been in 71 years!
Jon Lester pitched one hell of a game! This is why the Cubs paid big bucks for him. 12-1 with a 1.59 era since the all star break…sound familiar? Yep, Jake last year and Lester this year! Just awesome!
How about the Cubs offense the last 2 games? I said it, if they keep hitting like that, teams dont have a chance. Rizzo and Russell are hot. Baez and Bryant are staying hot. Back to back hrs for Russell and none bigger than the one he hit in the 6th last night to break a nerve wrenching 1-1 tie. Cubs pour on in the 8th to win 8-4 and head back to Wrigley with a chance to end it. Yes, it will be against kershaw, but I said it before the series that the Cubs would beat him once…enter Sat night! Cubs nation rolls home to Wrigley…will they close it out or force us through and agonizing game 7? A day off today but who is really thinking about anything but tomorrow? Not me…I cant wait!
    Bleedin blue…Cubbie true!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
    5W!
