October 21, 2015: The Brink

Brink:  the point at which something, typically something unwelcome, is about to happen; the verge.

Bet you didn’t see this coming; I know I didn’t.  The Cubs lost yet another game to the Mets and are now down 3-0 in the NLCS. How did we get here?

It’s a combination of things really. Let’s just start with the Mets pitching. The starters have been good…really good. Some may say it’s the Cubs bats going to sleep, but I’d lean this way instead. The Cubs have been somewhat streaky all year offensively. Obviously down the stretch they were hot.  They did enough in the wild card game. They mashed vs the Cards. They’ve cooled quickly against these young arms of the Mets.  The major league leaders in strikeouts are doing just that. The slugging cubbies are essentially home run or bust; like a team of Adam Dunns. Ouch.  This just didn’t happen overnight. This just didn’t happen by itself. When the series started I said it was the best young pitching vs the best young hitting, and that pitching usually wins out. Well, it’s currently 3 zip.

How about those rookies being rookies?  God forbid the kids make mistakes. That’s exactly what’s happening too. Losing our best defender for the NLCS didn’t help, but misplays in the field included Baez, Bryant, Soler, and Schwarber; what’s that, like an average age of 21. This Cubs team wasn’t supposed to be here this year, yet they are. They thrilled us all year long, then followed up with dramatic postseason victories. Why shouldn’t we believe they would continue on?  Why is it so hard to believe that they may not?

It’s never easy losing. It’s the absolute worst thing in sports. Everything is criticized. Everybody is blamed. Nobody is happy. Yet, it’s a really easy thing to fix. Win. Winning cures all. One win can turn things around in a hurry. I was hoping for that win tonight. I will be holding out hope for that win tomorrow.

How did we really think this was going to look?  The Cubs going all the way I mean. Like I said, beating the Cards seemed like it should be part of the script. A dramatic series comeback would also seem like a prerequisite. Well, it doesn’t get more dramatic than this. Do I actually believe this could happen?  Do you really have to ask?

I’m in a better place than I thought I would be right now. It’s kind of like the pressure, the stress has been lifted. There are no expectations now; there is nobody that believes the Cubs can do this. Series done, wait until next year again.  Being on the brink is almost therapeutic. It’s the perfect place for these young, fun loving cubbies. We lose now, we are expected to.  No pressure right?

Maybe.  Maybe these guys will feel like that.  I hope they do.  This season has been a smashing success.  Yes, it will still hurt if and when that final out is made and the drought extends to 108.  That never changes.  It’s either football season early or a painful October exit for us Cubs fans.  This year may prove to be the latter.  Yet, it doesn’t feel like other, past failures.  I’ll get into that more in a future blog, or maybe I won’t.  Maybe I can write about a win on Wednesday night, and maybe even a win on Thursday night.  What about a game 6 where Jake returns to the mound in New York.  You see how quickly things can turn.

So this eternal optimist that is a die hard Cubs fan goes to sleep peaceful tonight.  I’m not mad.  I’m relaxed, and ready to watch another game in this awesome Cubs season…maybe we’ll get lucky, and see more than just one more.  Maybe the brink will do us well.  Just maybe…

I’m glad one Cubs fan feels like that. I have been up all night, thinking about the lose. Last night stomach pains were in over drive and from the dead bats to the lackluster defense, this Cubs team better take this more seriously. Perfect weather, fast ball in the low to mid 90s should have made for a high scoring game. Our fait lies with a pitcher we traded….. time to hit up Walgreens for some more Tums, smokes, and Advil!

Definitely not feeling peace. Mets have pitched well and hit ok. Cubs have fielded horribly (schwarby drop is an error!) and hit even worse. Not taking anything from mets, but the Cubs have picked the worst time to not play good baseball. 3 straight losses, backs against the wall. Great season, yes. Another disappointing ending, tbd. Hard to see this team going out like this. Here’s hoping they bring the bats with no holes in them tonight. 1game at a time, starting tonight. Get 1 W and who knows what can happen. We all know what happens if the Cubs lose 1 more, something all too familiar. I am not ready for that. Cubs nation is not ready. Snap out of it CUBBIES. Get your asses and bats in gear tonight. Let’s fly that W and turn it over to our aces, lester and arrieta. On the brink, yes, but 1 W may cure everything and turn this season back to the future…time to man up young CUBBIES!
    GO CUBS GO!!!

the last out last nite said it all…….strike 3 LOOKING !!!!!!!!!!!!
just like some of the little league teams of yore, ‘take a strike, let him walk ya’…..
    doesn’t work here…..
again, go up there and swing at the good pitches, not the crap that you have to because you allowed yourself to be put on the defensive…..
get your collective heads in the game and be aggressive tonite….and tomorrow, and saturday….
