When it comes to the baseball playoffs, man, it doesn’t get much better. Sure, I miss those days with the Cubs. There was a recent stat that flashed across the screen saying teams up by 3 runs in the 9th inning are like 500-1 or something like that, with the “1” being the 2016 Cubs in Game 4 of the NLDS vs the Giants. Yes, we were 3 outs away from going to a 5th and deciding Game 5 vs Johnny Cueto, who limited us to 1 run in the opener. I remember watching that game… I was sinking deeper and deeper into depression, as a Cubs loss appeared imminent. So much so was this sinking into the couch, that I started to doze off. I woke up in the top of the 9th, and the Cubs had 2 guys on base; Ben Zobrist was at the plate… talk about perfect timing. He lined a double into the corner and the rally was on. A big game tying Contreras hit, and a go ahead game winning Baez hit, followed by triple digit Aroldis in the bottom of the 9th to close the game and series out; boo ya! I’m glad the Cubs (and me) woke up.
No Cubs games to talk about in this year’s postseason, but it’s still true, albeit to a lesser degree; playoff baseball is fantastic. The Tigers finished off the Astros in the first game. Wow! Momentum can be a hell of a thing. The Tigers were all but pronounced dead at the start of September, but then BAM! They got in, and now, they’re moving on. I thought the Astros would be a tough matchup for them, but… 2 and done. Bye bye Houston, while the Tigers head to Cleveland to take on the Guardians; that should be a doozy. Next up, the Orioles choked again, losing 2 straight to the Royals, IN Baltimore, while scoring 1 run across both games… that’s horrible. Two great seasons by the O’s have been followed up with jack shit. KC heads to play the Yankees, in a series that most think will be lopsided…. hmmm.
In the National League, we finally have a 3 game Wild Card series going the distance, as the Brewers scored 3 in the bottom of the 8th to save their season for another night; that was a pretty cool comeback, even if it was the Brewers. Honestly, now that Yelich isn’t active, I don’t really hate the Brewers. They do have that one thing going for them: they have never won a World Series. Because of that, I’d be OK with them winning it all, but… would prefer the other team that has never won one. The San Diego Padres beat the Braves, and now head to LA to face the mighty Dodgers. I’ll tell you what… I like the Padres. The Phillies are still waiting to see who they play. This will be decided on Thursday night in Milwaukee; should be another great one.
I’ve been locked in to this postseason; look forward to some more great baseball. Haven’t really been betting it.. yet… but it’s still been great thus far. This will just have to do, until the Cubs get their heads out of their asses and field another playoff bound team. Next year right?
