October 2, 2022: Box Score Review

posted in: Bears | 0

The Bears lost 20-12 on Sunday vs the Giants in New York, or New Jersey I should say. How did they look? I didn’t watch any of the game believe it or not. Yeah, I had Joniak and Thayer on the radio in the car for a lot of the 1st half and on the radio in the garage for the 2nd half. My son’s baseball game, picking up my wife from her event, and trying to finally finish the basket I bought for us came first; don’t ask me how long it has taken me to do this or how much work it has been or how it’s “all done” now except the fact that it’s backwards… I said don’t ask! So, since I didn’t see any of the game, outside of a few highlights, I’m going to do what most people do… a box score review. Now I know, and you know, that it’s not all about the #s; watching the game certainly gives you a better idea of what really took place… studying the tape after the fact, if that’s your thing, will show you even more. But, I’m not doing that, I’m not rewatching the game whose result I already know, so… here it goes.

Justin Fields 11-22, 174 yards. I guess by his recent standards, this isn’t horrible. Sure, it’s not a typical NFL QB’s stats, at least one that I’d want to have on my fantasy football team. When you add in his running #s, 7-52, I guess it wasn’t a total bust… Thing that jumped out at me was the 6 sacks; that’s not good. Was the line not giving him enough time? Was it the play calling? Was it his bad decision making? Probably a combination of all I would guess. Still, the fact remains… Fields must be better. I did see him connect with Mooney on a nice deep ball; Darnell actually caught 4 balls in this one, the only WR to catch a pass… that ain’t good either, but that’s the lack of weapons, right? We have to be patient, not only with the rebuild, because that’s what this is, AND with Fields, who just started his 14th game. Have we seen enough to know that he will NOT be a franchise QB? Don’t answer that… For me, the jury is still out, and will be out for the time being… until I decide, got it?

Khalil Herbert 19-77; not horrible #s. The thing I noticed about the box score, between the passing, rushing, and receiving… ZERO TDs!!! That definitely ain’t going to get it done. I heard them driving up and down the field, good enough for 4 FGs from some guy we just picked up off the street; nice job! But kicking FGs ONLY is not a good formula for success. It may get you 1 win some day, but not much more than that. 4.1 yds/carry is OK for Herbert. Should the Bears have run more? Then we’d be bitching about the lack of balance. I don’t care about that normally. I certainly don’t care about that when we win; when we lose, everything is up for question.

20 points is not too bad to give up for our D, although they kind of let that 1 guy that we shouldn’t have let beat us, beat us. Saquon… 162 total yards… the one guy we should have been focused on… Our run D is looking a little weak too; that ain’t good, especially with double barrel action coming at us next week with the Vikings.

All of this being said… if that rookie doesn’t drop the punt, and if Fields leads us to the one and only TD of the day, we still could have won. Not horrible, I guess is how I feel. Maybe if I watched the game I would feel worse… Bear Down!
