October 19, 2016: Changing the Script

posted in: Cubs | 3

Ouch.  That Game 3 loss was brutal.  That was NOT the Cubs team I watched all year.  That was NOT Clayton Kershaw on the mound.  The series is NOT tied any more.  Thankfully, there is time to recover.

It has to start tonight in Game 4.  If you’ve read anything I’ve ever written, you know I hate when the term “must-win” is thrown around, so I will not say it.  After all, what’s the worst that can happen if the Cubs lose tonight, besides every fan running to the panic room?  We would have Lester, Hendricks, and Arrieta lined up for the last 3 games of the series; 2 of those would be at home.  So possibly the Cy Young, Cy Young runner up, and last year’s Cy Young; the only problem is that we would have to face another Cy Young finalist in Kershaw again.  Let’s not go there yet.  I’m not walking toward the ledge after this loss.

It wasn’t fun.  It was depressing.  To see this mighty Cubs team struggle badly was not easy on the eyes, or the head, or the heart.  But, remember, they ARE the mighty Cubs.  They are the 103 win Cubs with (I believe) the most come from behind victories this season; I may be wrong, but I know they were among the tops in that category… like a lot of categories this year.  Forget all the old shit from past years; don’t let that panic reflex kick in too bad yet.  So we’re down in the series; that’s not a fun place to be.  But all we need is 1 win in LA to get back home field advantage.  Sure, I’d love 2; I would have loved all 3, but it’s too late for that.  We can still get two wins, and at the very least, one.  That gets us back to Wrigley.  And if any team can do it, it is THIS Cubs team.  This isn’t any of the past Cubs teams; these guys are different, aren’t they?  That chapter is yet to be written.

What I can’t believe is how ex-Cub Rich Hill pitched last night.  He looked absolutely rattled in the 2nd inning; it was like we had him on the ropes early.  His pitch count was climbing.  We just couldn’t get the big hit that inning, and then the offense went to sleep.  Maybe I didn’t give Rich Hill enough credit; maybe he is a better pitcher than I thought he was.  Or, maybe the Cubs offense just sucked ass.  Maybe it was a combination of the two.  So an ex-Cub came back to hurt us; didn’t I predict that?  And now, we have to face a rookie; yeah, let’s not make him look like Clayton Kershaw too.

We send our “big game” pitcher to the mound tonight.  That guy who we acquired for these very moments.  The guy who didn’t do too hot in Game 4 vs the Giants, although we DID win that game…

It was a gut shot last night, but it was only the 3rd round of this fight.  We’re still standing.  This isn’t just any other Cubs team, that will fold from this point.  Let’s have a little faith in this team.  If you want to talk about history, what have the most epic losses been?  They been of the blowing a big lead variety, in 84, in 03.  So we’re down a game in this series; is it time to invoke history?  Is it time for full out panic?  Is it time to throw in the towel?

No.  Hell no.  What about changing the script?  Just like I said yesterday, and how this Cubs team has done stuff that we usually only see other teams do.  It’s time for that to ring true again.  It’s time for the real 2016 Cubs to show up tonight.  It’s time to do what this team is supposed to do.  Fly the W for starters.  Wait, no, how about score a run for starters?  Then we can worry about winning, coming back to Wrigley, winning the NLCS, getting to the World Series, winning the World Series.  There are a lot of chapters still to write for this team.  I refuse to believe it’s going to end any time before then.  It’s time to tighten those seat belts.  We knew it wouldn’t be easy.  This is just the latest of many tests for this Cubs team.  They’ve passed every one so far.  Next exam, 7:08 tonight.  Let’s Go Cubs!!!

Last night was definitely not pretty. Cubs offense has to be found quickly. Need to get off to a fast start and score first! Pitching and defense have been fine…it comes down to the offense to get some runs on the board for the pitchers!!!

Ouch is right! Having flashbacks to last year vs the mets with the Cubs’ offense pulling another disappearing act, at the worst time possible, too! Maddon juggled the lineup a bit to no avail. Unfortunately, guys have to snap out of it…all mental right now. All it will take is stringing a few hits together or getting a timely hit to jumpstart this team. Back to back postseason shutouts hurts. At the end of the day, nothing has changed with this team. Same group that won 103 games. Same team that scored 4 in the 9th vs sf in the nlds. Same Cubbies that will snap out of this slump and get this series even tonight…1 way or another. Hope is not lost. Belief is alive and well. Biggest game of the year tonight so a quick turnaround to get that ugly taste out of their mouths from last night. Pressure is building. Doubt is creeping in. Bad memories and 108 years of losing come flooding back. Like maddon says, time to run toward the pressure…good things are going to happen! That starts tonight. The Cubs answer the bell and get this series nodded. Believe it or not, the Cubs time is now! Even it up and finish the best of 3 with our horses, on the mound and at the plate! GO CUBS GO!!!

After last nights game, I must admit, some of the Cubs blood spilled out of me….when the Crying Man Rich Hill can beat you using that pathetic curve ball that a minor leaguer can hit…I hit a wall man…too much for me to handle. Hopefully todays game will be different. We need a game that is lopsided…Cubs 17 Dodgers 4. I watched Game 2 and 3 at home, so changing it up…heading to the bar….RIP my 16 year old tube TV. You were older than my kids and my marriage….and you had a remote (plus glass ash-tray) thrown right at you….Thanks LA!
