October 17, 2023: Who’s to Blame

An offseason of anticipation… a 1-5 start… who’s to blame?

When shit goes south, you look for someone to blame. It has to be somebody’s fault, right? When you’re talking about a billion dollar franchise like the Chicago Bears, and you can’t win an NFL championship going on 38 years… what is the problem? We’re not alone. There are teams who have never won it. There are teams that look just as pathetic as us. Remember, in the big scheme of things, there is only 1 team that has more NFL championships than the Bears. Just because it happened before we were born, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen… But yeah, we’re going on a few decades of futility; it hasn’t been all bad. We’ve had some playoff runs; our 2nd trip to the Super Bowl was no fluke. That defense, Devin Hester… man; shoulda, woulda, coulda won that one. But, we move on. We move on in our search for a franchise QB; something that could change the trajectory of this franchise. Something we haven’t had since before most of us were born. We think we found somebody, again, and… jury is still out IMO. Yet, the results are in, and it ain’t pretty. A 1-5 start with that QB under review potentially out with an injury… woof!

Let’s start somewhere. I’ll start with the first play of the game this past Sunday. The Bears lined up; we knew what we were going to call on the first offensive play of the game right? Don’t they say so many of them are scripted to start the game? Well, this planned, scripted play call to start the game ended with a Vikings defender in a full sprint towards Justin Fields, untouched on the blind side, planting him on his ass; come again? I know it happens, but on the FIRST PLAY OF THE GAME?!?! I’m having a hard time with this one. How could that happen right out of the gate? You can’t blame Fields for holding onto the ball in this case; dude came right in… UNTOUCHED!!! If that’s the way our game plan started off this week, then… it’s hard not to point the dirty finger at coaching… or was it the LT that completely blew his assignment. There’s really NO excuse for this on the first play of the game, none.

Fields is the guy that gets all of the attention; it comes with the territory. As the QB, everybody looks to you whether things are going right or wrong; YOU are one of the main components of winning vs losing. Now you understand why the Bears have struggled for so long… So, yeah, Justin has to own it, but… we know that it isn’t just one person, no matter how critical to our success he may be. Not making excuses here, just facts; the players around him on offense need to be up to par. I like our weapons, although our RB position is depleted; we still ran the ball relatively well; why stop? Our OL… well, this is a shitshow, again… why?!?! We knew this was an issue last year. We want to put Justin in the best position to succeed. How is this happening again? The play calling… from one game to the next, I don’t know what the hell I’m watching. Still, a franchise QB needs to rise above it all, and make everybody better, right? This is the current predicament the Bears are in.

Fire the coach. Trade Fields now. The team Poles has put together sucks. The OC should be canned. Start tanking for the draft. There is no shortage of ideas on how to fix this thing. What is the right answer? Honestly, I don’t know. But someone, you’d figure somebody that is part of this 6 billion dollar franchise, would have some answers, no? Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse… I feel like this will still get worse, before it gets better. Keep your heads up Bears fans…
