I’d be pissed if I went into Lindy’s and they told me no more chili, but when the Cubs announced that hitting coach Chili Davis was relieved of his duties, I was happy. It was not a surprise. Somebody had to be held accountable for the 40 games of scoring 1 run, including the last 2 games to end our season. It’s easier to fire one guy than the whole damn team.
How much influence does a hitting coach have? I look up and down the Cubs roster and think that there is no way this team can’t hit… I don’t care if the Cubs saved money and didn’t have a hitting coach. Just get out there and do your thing. But… I also have to keep in mind the age of these guys. These Cubs, although having accomplished so much already, having some household names, having some future HOFers, are still a very young team. So… I guess it does make sense that they need some guidance. That, plus the game is constantly changing with all these stats and defensive shifts; it’s good to have somebody focused on that stuff. I guess Chili didn’t fit the bill.
I liked Chili Davis. When the Cubs first signed him, I just thought back to his playing days, and all the baseball cards I had of his. I remember a lot of guys in the 80s, but with a name like Chili, it’s definitely hard to forget. Not much was said about Chili throughout the season. Yes, when the team was on a hot streak and scoring a lot of runs, some credit was thrown his way. Vice versa, when the Cubs were slumping, shade was thrown his way. The offensive slumping is what eventually did us and Chili in.

It may take a while to figure out how to pronounce his name, but he is familiar with us. A disciple of ex-Cubs batting coach John Mallee, spending a lot of time in the Cubs system, Anthony should be able to step right in. Of course there will be the added pressure coming into a situation that needs to get better, but if he remembers who the Cubs have on this roster, that may make it a bit easier. Not sure what Chili was talking about… he made some weird comments on the way out, trying not to throw anybody under the bus, but certainly saying that he had issues with a lot of the guys. I wonder who? Willson comes to mind first. Schwarby maybe? I mean, Baez had a great year… Rizzo came on strong. KB was down primarily due to injuries. Who else? It doesn’t matter now.
The core Cubs guys seem like pretty easy dudes to get along with; they seem like they would be pretty open minded, taking cues from their manager in that aspect too. Trying to take in something somebody is saying, sure, but if it was something that went against some things that they think they know from hitting a baseball all their lives… I could see how this could be a tough job.
In the end though, I would think that the talent would win out. I thought that would happen this year, but I was wrong. Still can’t believe we went out like that… and because of that something needed to change. Chili was the first to go; I’m sure there will be many more changes, ones that we’ll talk about as the days go on. Until then, all this talking about Chili is getting me hungry; have to make that trip down Archer soon… Go Cubs!

Chili aint got no beans! See ya! I was ok with the chili davis move, but he definitely had to take the fall for the way the offense performed this year. Obviously not 100% his fault, but if guys are not listening to what he is teaching, it is time to move on, even if it has only been a year. Then he wants to come out and say he had issues with guys…even better then. Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out.
Welcome Anthony Iapoce! Hopefully, you can step in and make sense of a head scratcher in regard to all this talent underperforming offensively. Might not be easy, but it needs to happen. The Cubs cannot have another offensive year like this. So the first move has been made. You already know Theo is not going to sit still and do nothing, so expect more. Some guys may be sacrificed that we would not think in years past. At this point, whatever needs to happen to get the Cubs back to the World Series! GO CUBS GO!!!
