October 14, 2023: College Love

Let’s give College Football a litte love shall we? Most years, I don’t really pay that close attention to it until Bowl Season. There have been years I’ve followed closer than others, but this year… I’m pretty zoned in. It’s tough to completely zone in with so many teams and games each weekend, but betting on the games has surely brought me closer to College Football, more so than in many years.

I’ve started watching the ESPN Gameday on Saturday mornings; my son likes it too. He likes when they make the picks at the end of the segment; I also like that part, because I get an idea of who most people are on, so, you know, I can go opposite. Anyways, this Saturday they were in Washington state for the big Oregon-Washington showdown. We didn’t see much of it, since he has basketball practice now on Saturday mornings, but I was paying attention to that and many other games this Saturday.

I did watch the end of the Oregon Washington game; what an ending. What a stupid, stupid move by Oregon to go for it on 4th down right before Washington took the lead. I really don’t understand it; it’s like I’m watching the Bears. I get being aggressive; I’m all for it. However, you have to take into consideration the big picture, like score, time left on the clock, etc. Make them drive the whole field to score a TD with like 2 minutes left; why would you give them a short field? It took them 2 downfield passes to take the lead. Now that did leave time on the clock for the Ducks to redeem themselves, but… they missed a game tying FG and the Huskies remained undefeated. I’m glad I didn’t bet on this game, because I was definitely leaning Oregon.

You know, sometimes it’s best NOT to bet on a game. I didn’t really love a whole lot of the action going on. All the top ranked teams laying all those points; I did take a piece on Syracuse… that was a bust. Florida St demolished them. I was going to bet against Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State; that would have been 0-3. I was going to take Vandy against Georgia; I would have covered that one. I wanted to take Illinois, who won outright, but can’t bet on Illinois college teams; that’s stupid as hell. I liked many other teams; most of them would have lost. I did bet one other game though.

ND over USC; bam! I loved the line when it came out, but then I was kind of worried. You know, it’s good to be worried about your pick; it’s normal. If you’re not worried about it, and you feel that confident, then, well… yeah, so, there has to be a story for the other side to win. If you can’t possibly see how the other team can win, then you may be on the wrong side. I did come full circle back to ND, and hit them, for a small winning day on a Saturday where most of my picks would have been losers. Growth man.

But yeah, definitely digging some college football. With the games during the week too… sheesh, a lot of stuff to look at; I’ve been doing a lot of reading about some obscure matchups. Sometimes you may find a little something something that clicks; I’ll keep looking. Kind of like Penn St next week… we’ll see. On to Sunday!
