October 13, 2024: Are We Good?

posted in: Bears | 0

The Bears handled the Jaguars on Sunday morning in London to move their record to 4-2 through the first 6 games into the season, heading into the bye week. That just leaves me to answer one question: Are We Good?

You know what my answer is. If my pre-season prediction of 10 wins for the Bears comes true, then yeah, I would say we ARE good. Of course, there are many things to point to that should keep us grounded. Our wins have come against the Titans (they suck and we should have lost that game), the Rams (brutally impacted by injuries), the Panthers (doormat of the NFL), and the Jaguars (first coach to be fired this year will be… ). I get it. I also don’t think the Bears can determine who is on their schedule and when; I don’t think we have any control over injuries or the construction of other teams’ rosters. We do have control over playing our best against whoever is on the schedule, whenever we face them. Have the Bears played their best football yet? Another good question.

At this point in the season, I don’t think you could ask for much more. Heading into the bye week with a 4-2 record… man, I’m happy as hell. Do I think the Bears will win the Super Bowl this year? Well, I always think/hope that, but realistically, probably not. Do I think the Bears have a shot at having a winning record this year? Yes. Do I think a record above 500 will get us in to the dance? I did, but now, maybe not. You see who the best division in football is, right? All that “playing against nobody” talk will soon be in the rearview, once we start playing our division foes. Those games, each and every one of them, will be highly competitive. There is no easy W in our division, not this year. So, 9 wins may not get us in; 10 wins should? And if we get in… OK, let’s stay in the present.

I’m happy with what I’ve seen from Caleb Williams. Is he doing this against the best defenses in the league? No, we’ve already talked about that. But he’s doing it, and that’s all that really matters. Dare I say the Bears finally got it right at the most important position in football? I get it if we don’t want to confirm that; I understand wanting to give it some time. Usually, we’re giving our QBs time because they suck so bad, and we’re hoping they turn out to be OK. If we’re giving Caleb time to look worse than he has so far, that’s a switch… one which I’m fine with, considering how the other route has went… multiple times. I like what I see. Does that mean he’s an instant HOF QB? Does that mean he’s the franchise? No… not yet. It means he’s doing what an NFL QB should do, something we’ve been unfamiliar with for decades. Getting it right at the QB position, if we actually have done it, is HUGE for our future; it’s pretty fun for the right now too. We’ve only just begun… I hope.

You see all my disclaimers? You see how cautious I’m being? Cautiously optimistic is the term I believe, and yes, I am very optimistic about this team, both this year and for the years to come. I don’t want to get over my skis though… live in the present; enjoy the moment. It’s all about the journey. What lies for us at the end of this journey? Let’s wait and see. Until then… Bear TF Down!!!
