October 13, 2021: Hello Hockey

Wednesday night brought us the return of the Blackhawks in their season opener in Colorado against the Avs. Lots to talk about, as always, but my overall feeling was one of happiness; it was good to see the boys back out there on the ice skating in front of a full crowd… can’t wait to see them in the UC. Yes, regardless of the final score, it was good to be back… hello hockey!

For a while, it felt like the Hawks skated into the middle of an All-Star game. Holy crap were the Avs flying around. It looked like the Hawks were standing still out there for the first half plus of the first period. Fleury got welcomed to his new position by a skater all alone coming at him like a penalty shot; 1-0 Avs. The second goal was much different; hard to blame anybody for a double deflection, just tap the stick for the other team. The third was top shelf, again, by an unchecked guy skating up on the rush. I’d really like to know what Fleury was saying into that mic at that point… probably something like, what the hell did I just do coming to this team? Welcome to the land of no defense; talk to Crow… he’ll tell you about it. OK, let’s not be so negative out of the gates…

The Lanche are quite possibly the best team in the division, and one of the best in the NHL; they were ready to go. And yes, it is true, that last year I was bitching about having the Lightning, Panthers, and Hurricanes in our division due to the COVID realignment, but the one team that we didn’t have in our division, was Colorado. Well, welcome back… this was a great measuring stick for the boys right out of the gate. And you know what? After that opening period barrage, the Hawks didn’t play half bad. They outscored them from that point 2-1, losing the game 4-2.

Obviously great to see the Captain back out there, regardless of how he played; I’m sure it’s going to take a minute for him to get back up to game speed. Loved what Dach did out there. Yeah, yeah, he missed his two golden opportunities, but that’ll come. The dude is a star in the making; there is no limit to his potential… I’m looking forward to seeing how good he can actually be. Fleury did his best considering the circumstances; I think we’ll find out that we can trust him over time. Of course Kubalik with a beautiful PP goal; Murphy lit the lamp too, which I missed because I’m old and fell asleep, but who got absolutely screwed with a non-penalty call followed by a breakaway followed by a penalty call on him sequence earlier in the game. There were certainly some positives to take out of game 1.

And this is where I’m choosing to live right now. It was one game against one of the best teams in the NHL on their home ice in front of their fans for the first time in 2 years. With all that being said, I think the Hawks certainly held their own. I love the fight in them… some big hits, couple scuffles. I want to see more of that, for 60 minutes a night, plus some if necessary. Who wants it more? If we can say nobody wants it more than the Hawks, then what more can you ask for? If we want it that bad, with the talent we have, we’ll be just fine. Glad to see the Blackhawks back…
