As I sat watching Game 5 of the NLCS between the Nats and Dodgers, I kept debating who I’d rather play. I wanted to play the Dodgers due to the revenge factor, but came to the conclusion that the Nationals were the worst team; we could beat them easier. After watching some of the base running decisions that they made, and knowing that Dusty would somehow make a stupid coaching decision, I thought, yes, the Nationals would be best for the Cubs to play. Then came the 7th inning.
As the Dodgers scored 4 runs, taking a 4-1 lead, the hairs on the back of my neck started to stand. I know it’s 8 years removed from 2008, but I remember. THAT was the exact reason I wanted to play them; I wanted revenge. When the Nationals scored 2 in the bottom of the inning, I thought maybe they’d come back; my hairs relaxed. I ended up falling asleep in the 9th inning right after seeing Kershaw in the bullpen. When I woke up in the middle of the night, I saw the final; it was official. The Cubs would meet the Dodgers in the NLCS.
There is no reason to allow time for hate to build towards this Dodgers team; I already hate them. I already wrote about this here: http://www.thelocalsportstalk.com/august-4-2014-the-hate-files-vii/. I don’t care that it was 8 years ago; until we beat them when it counts, that hate will remain. We finally have another chance to do that.
If you recall back in 2008, the Cubs were the best team in the regular season. That is about the only thing that they share in common with this year’s version. There are 0 Cubs players on the roster that were around back in 2008. Heck, half of these guys were teenagers back then. The Dodgers do have a few remnants… Kershaw and Ethier. Kershaw wasn’t Kershaw back then, and Ethier… well, what was he ever? So no, there will be no Russell Martin or James Loney to worry about in this series. No Manny Ramirez or Jonathan Broxton; no Joe Torre in the dugout… they’re all gone. A lot has changed in the past 8 years.

I do know one thing that matters; Kershaw cannot pitch every game… or can he? He is the one guy I have a ton of respect for, especially after going on 3 days rest again, and then coming back 2 days later to save the clincher. Other than him… well, Jansen is pretty damn good in the bullpen, but other than those 2 guys. Rich Hill? Really? Sure, he’ll go out and pitch his ass off against us being an ex-Cub and all. But come on… Rich fricking Hill?
On offense, I am already seeing the new nemesis: Justin Turner. Did you see his postseason numbers they flashed on the screen yesterday? Did you see what he did yesterday? The guy is locked in. Another not so famous name that is making a name for himself when it matters most. Him and all the left handed bats that are in that lineup, make this a tough match up for the Cubs.
So it’s a quick 5 hour drive down the coast of California from San Fran to LA for this next round. I remember it well. I remember LA well. I remember 2008 well. I almost feel like, depending on how the series plays out, trying to get out there for Game 5… doubt it though. If the Cubs were up 3-1, maybe… Long way from there.
It’s not going to take a long time to build up hate though. As I saw the final, it rushed back like it was yesterday. Here is this team that I already hate standing in the way between the Cubs and their first World Series in 71 years. Turn up the hate dial to 10. I sure hope the Cubs plow their ass… NLCS preview coming next.

Revenge is a dish best served COLD! Time for the Cubs to make it extra icy for the dodgers. Nobody on their team scares me but kershaw and utley. I am sure a couple guys step up like they did for the giants. Not underestimating this team, but I am confident in the Cubs and what they can do. They got out of the nlds in 4 games. Few extra days of rest never hurts. Time to zone back in Cubbies. The nlcs awaits and a trip to the elusive world series!
GO CUBS GO!!!
