October 13, 2014: All Together Now

For one Sunday, it all came together.  This was the Bears team we were supposed to get this year.  A great offense with multiple weapons.  An improved defense that made the occasional big play.  A special teams unit that doesn’t sink us.  It all came together just in time for the Bears, who improved to 3-3, with a 27-13 win over the Falcons.

Good Jay was in full force Sunday.  With 381 yards, 1 TD, and 0 turnovers, he was the QB we paid the big bucks for.  In his Jekyll and Hyde, 6-years-running act in Chicago, he turned in one of his finest performances.  He even did the little things right, like throwing the ball away, even with his left hand!  He made a few nice runs and took advantage of ALL his weapons.  Why can’t it be this easy every week Jay?  The Georgia Dome is NOT an easy place to play, and the Falcons are no slouch.  Jay showed up when we needed him most, and couldn’t afford to drop another game in the NFC.  He deserves praise for this one, and I’ll be the first to give it.

The 0 turnovers are really the key.  Actually, the magic number seems to be 1 or less turnovers.  They flashed a stat across the screen about Cutler’s career:  37-13 (now 38) when he has less than 2 picks & 4-18 when he has more than 2 picks.  I’m not the head coach, but I’d think I’d show this stat to Jay before every start.  Protect the ball and good things will happen.

I don’t think he has anything to complain about concerning the weapons he has on offense.  With Forte having a monster game, both Marshall and Jeffery going over 100 yards, Bennett making some big catches, and even Josh Morgan catching a TD, this Bears offense was who we thought they would be.  I love the fact that we went deep a couple times.  We didn’t complete every one, but it’s just the fact that we did it.  With those 2 monster wide outs we got, why not throw it deep, and worst case, let them use their height 50 yards down the field.  They need to do this every week, at the very least to keep the defense honest.  A+ is the grade for the offense in this one.

Raise your hand if you thought the Bears were going to hold the Atlanta Falcons to 13 points on Sunday?  The defense turned in its best performance of the year on Sunday.  How nice is it to get pressure on the QB?  It makes such a big difference in the game.  Willie Young led the way, and Jared Allen got on the stat sheet, as the Bears recorded 4 sacks.  On top of that, the run defense was rock solid, and Fuller did a pretty nice job on Julio Jones.  My hand was not raised when I asked the question above, and I’m still kind of shocked we only gave up 13 points.  Is the defense turning the corner?

How about that Devin Hester?  Well, he performed about as well as he did his last year with the Bears.  I was very impressed with the Bears coverage units in this one.  Yeah, they still didn’t show any kind of a return game, but we shut down theirs.  I’m still kind of shocked that Gould missed an extra point, but I’m glad it didn’t come back and haunt us.  I’m not worried about him.  If the special teams unit can continue to cover the kicks like that (and block for our punter), I’ll be satisfied.

As I flipped back to my preview of this game, I was pretty impressed with myself.  My keys to the game were 0 turnovers (check), use all of our weapons (check), and make good in game adjustments (check).  The last one had me worried for a second.  I knew Atlanta would come out in the 2nd half and put up some points.  This coupled with our 2nd half struggles had me worried, especially when they tied it up at 13 with 10 unanswered out of the break.  But, the Bears bounced back, and did what they should have done in a couple earlier games; exert their will on the opposing defense.  Kudos to the coaching staff also.  I’m still not 100% confident in the red zone play calling, but overall the play calling worked today.  Isn’t it nice to win?  Got nice things to say about everybody…

Well, winning sure does put me in a good mood.  The clouds have passed for a week, and we can see a ray of sunshine peeking through.  This is the week to week life we live in the NFL.  With Miami coming to our house next week, I’m calling for another important W, especially with where we have to go the following week (Foxboro).  The Packers and Lions keep winning; we have to do the same.  It’s time to settle in, get in our groove, and play like we should play.  We took care of business this week, but that only is the start.  It’s the start of things we must do consistently here on out if we want a slot in the postseason.  We’ve proven we can do it, now the key is repeating the feat.  I’m ready to see that.
