The Sox were easy; their offseason should not be complicated. The Cubs on the other hand…
We knew back in 2015 & 2016, that this team would be together for a number of years. Well, that number is up, and because the Cubs have not returned to the World Series since 2016, there are decisions that must be made. Some of these decisions would have to be made anyways. Making these decisions after winning isn’t fun; making them after losing is even worse. Look at all the guys the Blackhawks have had to let go through their Cup run. Now the Cubs have a really nice run of making the postseason, and they did do it all in 2016, but there is no denying the disappointment that exists today. Something would have to change due to the salaries etc; something MUST change because of the end result on the field. Where do we begin?
How about the guys that will be free agents? The Cubs have a club option with Lester; with all the talk about possibly pitching in his last game at Wrigley, I’m guessing the feeling is this will NOT be picked up. Chatwood and Quintana are both free agents; if we can keep them for cheap, I guess. Not really seeing either of these guys sticking around. That leaves Yu, Hendricks, and Mills in the starting rotation. Will Alzolay finally take his spot in the rotation? What about Mike Montgomery? He still around… haha. Starting pitching will be a need for the Cubs too. The other two club options are Rizzo and Descalso; I think we know the answer to one of them. Descalso will not be around; what about Rizzo? The need to shake things up is real; would the Cubs possibly NOT pick up his option? I highly doubt that, and honestly, he is one of the guys that should not be going anywhere. Maybin, Kipnis, Phegley, Hamilton… will probably all not return. Chafin and Winkler the same in the bullpen I imagine. That really rounds up the free agents. What about the other guys who are “restricted” free agents I guess..

Who will stay, who will go? Like I said, this isn’t going to be easy. The Cubs will not be keeping both Contreras and Caratini I imagine. Willson was about the only Cubs player that showed some fire in his belly IMO. He’s improved his framing; his offense, although down like everybody else this year, is still great for a catcher. We need to sign him to a multi year deal; Vic is gone… wish we could have got something for him. He’ll be starting somewhere next year. Happ had a great year, the best offensive year of any Cub player. If we could sign him and deal him, I think we can get some serious value; I’m not tied to Happ staying here long term, and after his “breakout” year, this may be the perfect time to move him. Schwarbino… there is still some pop in that bat, he isn’t the worst outfielder defensive wise in Chicago, but his value is probably the highest in the AL, with the DH as an option; although is the DH going to stick in the NL long term? His average is in the tank though… seemingly, he either homers, strikes out, or walks the majority of the time; I’m sure there’s a stat for that. But has he become Adam Dunn? We may have seen Kyle play his last game in a Cubs uniform. That leaves Bryant and Baez… them two along with Rizzo got zero hits this postseason; those are supposed to be THE three guys.
Will KB or Javy be gone next year? To be continued…
