October 10, 2021: Winning on 20

posted in: Bears | 0

The Bears ended their Vegas trip on a winning note, unlike many of mine, with a 20-9 victory over the Raiders. Winning on 20 is a high probability outcome at the Blackjack table; thankfully, it was enough in this NFL game. 20 points is typically not enough, but when the defense played like they did on Sunday, and the Raiders played like they did, it was more than enough.

What’s up with that defense? They played great. You know what I like? I like when they line up 9-10 guys on the line of scrimmage, forcing the offensive line to guess who’s coming and who’s not. I’m sure it’s tough to do when the offense spreads you out, but showing like you’re bringing the house is a smart strategy, even if you don’t always actually do it. This was supposedly what Pagano was going to bring with him when he replaced Fangio a couple years back; I don’t remember seeing it. There was more pressure with the Fangio D then Pagano. So I guess it makes sense that one of his disciples Desai, the current D coordinator, is starting to open it up a bit. When you got a guy playing CB like Jaylon Johnson is, that helps a lot. And how about 52? There’ve been games when you haven’t heard his name a lot over the years, but so far this year, after that first game, he’s been really, really good. We still have the horses on D; hoping Desai puts them in position to succeed. They sure did on Sunday.

The loss of Montgomery was nullified by the play of backup RBs Williams and Herbert. I had liked what I saw out of Williams thus far; of course I remember how he played with the Chiefs, especially in the Super Bowl. I remembered how Herbert looked in the preseason; I know it was only preseason, but he showed promise. I think this duo will help us stay afloat without Monty for a while. The O line was good too. Fields did get roughed up a bit. That one hit, the helmet to the kidney by that Raiders safety; ouch! But he got his a bit later on, when Peters absolutely plowed him. And yeah, about Fields… no complaints here. He’s starting, the Bears are winning, all is right in the world. He played good; he’ll need to keep getting better. I think he will. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pumped up right about now.

One of my buddies actually made it out to the game; he sent me some pics. He said it was about 50-50 Bears Raiders fans out there; that makes sense. I knew Chicago would be representing. There’s enough transplants already living out that way, on top of all the Bears fans wanting to see this first game ever in Vegas. You couldn’t really tell too much from the CBS broadcast; wonder why that is. Sometimes they really play on the crowd noise; I know it had to be loud in there… just didn’t come through on the TV. I’m not complaining though.

Bears win, Bears win! At 3-2, they are ahead of where I thought they would be at this point. Looking ahead at the schedule, it’s not going to be easy, but it never is. First thing’s first… Packers week. Bring it on.
