I think that Game 7 of the 2016 World Series is the best game I will ever watch. Many, many awesome games that I’ve watched and been to; hopefully many more to come. Yet, it would be hard pressed to top what happened in Cleveland that night. I watched a 30 minute condensed version of that game last night. It was awesome.
I remember a lot of this game clearly, yet some details are a blur. Emotions were running at an all time high. It was the ultimate roller coaster ride that topped off the wildest postseason ride of my life. This game started off on a high.
The Fowler HR was the ultimate way to start this game; it reminded me of the Hester kick off return in the Super Bowl. I was only hoping that the outcome of this game would be better than that one. He had 3 hits in this one. He almost had the go ahead single in the top of the 9th, after the Rajai shot to the gut. Dex will always be a favorite of mine because of this magical run; I’ll even overlook the fact that he plays for a shit team right now. He definitely came to play that night; most of the Cubs did.
From what I can recollect, I remember Kyle dealing. The liner that went off him proceeded by the pickoff at first showed us the zone he was in. Yes, when Joe pulled him after 4.2 innings and only 63 pitches after being squeezed by the ump on his very last batter, I wasn’t happy. As I watched the first 4.2 innings of this game, I have second thoughts. He did pitch in some high stress situations… 2 errors by the Cubs defense had to be pitched around. And then you have to factor in the stress of this game alone, although Kyle sure didn’t give that impression; he looked as cold as ice. But maybe Joe’s plan of Hendricks to Lester to Chapman was the best plan. It didn’t feel like that as we lived through it, but it did end pretty damn good.

Another thing that jumped out at me watching this was KBs base running. First of all, he was pretty zoned in himself; man did we miss that KB this year. But scoring on that short sac fly in the 4th, and then from 1st base on a long single by Rizzo in the 5th, just top notch base running. That’s what made this Cubs team so good; they had it all. I loved watching Bryant slide safely into home.
There was the Baez opposite field home run. Lots of going the opposite way in this game by the way; loved that. Willson double off the wall, Ross to straight away center, Bryant sac fly in the 10th, Zobrist in the 10th, Montero in the 10th. Most of these guys are still here; just knew they would channel it in this postseason.
I hate to think the Cubs won’t get back here, but I do realize how special that 2016 team was. Although most of the parts are the same, everything really needs to come together to win it all. Looking forward to seeing Theo and Joe put the puzzle together for 2019; looking forward to better results. Looking forward to unlimited walks down the 2016 memory lane; looking forward to another World Series title to compare it with. Now back to your regular scheduled programming…

Emotions were definitely running super high that day and night. I mean, the Chicago Cubs were going to play in a game 7, do or die, World Series champion deciding game. All this by winning the last 2 games after being down 3-1. Would this be the game that breaks the curse and ends the drought? Or would this just be another cruel joke on Cub nation? The game could not start any better as Dex hits a lead off homer. I remember thinking it was a fly out off the bat, but it kept going and going…same for Ross’ later in the game. So many memories from this game, but so many I’m sure I don’t remember, too. I do know that KB was a monster on the bases that night. There were also a lot of opposite field hits, including the game winners in the 10th from Zobrist and Miggy. Chappy gave it everything he had and left it on the field in the 9th. Both halves of the 9th are a blur for me after that shocking jolt to the system in the bottom of the 8th. Then the rain delay. I clearly remember walking outside in the rain, pacing back and forth, during the short delay. I was ready to walk miles. Cracked an old style as the 10th started and Schwarby gets on…the rest is history. What an amazing game! What a legendary Cubs team! Walking down 2016 memory lane will never get old and always gets the emotions going again. Another one would be sWeet without a doubt, but I don’t think anything will compare to the first!
