October 10, 2016: The First Test

posted in: Cubs | 1

Let me repeat:  you didn’t think this was going to be easy did you?  Hey, writing this blog after watching this marathon isn’t easy, but that’s not what I’m talking about.  For the Cubs to win this series vs the Giants, and any other future series for that matter, it will not be easy.  We have reached the first test.

Up until and including the Jake Arrieta 3 run homer in the 2nd inning, the Cubs postseason had been going awesome.  The Giants grinded from there, as the Cubs offense stalled, and eventually, took the lead.  This was a crazy game no doubt.  I had so many different ideas for this blog, sitting here, watching every twist and turn.  At the end of the night, it was a loss… against a good playoff team.  It was a loss that took every ounce of effort from the other team to beat the Cubs.  That’s what it will take for the Cubs to lose a game or a series.  The thing we learned again tonight, is that THESE Cubs will not go away easy.

It was the 8th inning, and Maddon went to Chappy.  That was a pivotal move.  The second part of that move was putting Almora in for Heyward.  The triple that gave the Giants the lead was just missed by Almora.  Would Heyward have caught it?  Welcome to the second guesser’s delight.

I think he would have.  It was his glove side vs Almora having to turn for it.  Heyward has longer strides than Almora.  Jason made an unbelievable catch in almost that same exact spot during the regular season.  I think he catches that ball.  I’m sure there’s some way to run the numbers to find out if that’s true.  Either way, Chappy blew the save, then gave up another run to give the Giants the 2 run lead.

Where was your head at that point?  Were you thinking here we go again… the Cubs are going to blow it?  Typical Cubs choking a game away?  The skeletons started knocking; I’m not going to lie… I heard them, but… I also knew who was coming up in the 9th against an inferior closer.  And I also know THIS Cubs team, and that they never die.  All this talk about the Giants never die, yada yada… the Cubs are the same exact way.  Bryant hit a 2 run homer to send the game to extras.  Awesome, awesome moment… just like the Jake shot earlier, or the Baez play, or the Almora catch, or Montgomery’s performance.  It didn’t turn out to be enough, and yeah, that sucks, but the fact that we just didn’t put our heads down, and walk into the tunnel with our tails between our legs, was positive to me.  It reminded me that THIS Cubs team IS different.  The result wasn’t what we wanted in Game 3, but let’s remember who still leads the series.  The Giants needed this game, and they poured every ounce into it.  Only if the Cubs had an experienced postseason pitcher that can pitch a big game tomorrow in Game 4… oh wait, we do.

I absolutely LOVE the match up in Game 4.  THIS is the perfect spot for Lackey.  After an emotional loss, the first test of this postseason, we look to lean on our experienced guys, and as pitchers go, Lackey is the one.  THIS is the reason we got him this off season.  The big postseason game is the EXACT reason we got him.  And the opposing pitcher… Matt Moore… I think we’re going to feast off him.  He was so hit and miss this year; he would have a good game, then a couple of bad ones… then a great one, then more bad ones.  I know, I had him on my fantasy team for a while.  I cut his ass.  I know he does have a bit of postseason experience, but nothing like Lack.  This Cubs offense should be able to work this guy, like they did MadBum, and score enough to win.

I know, the worries grow… the Cubs lost a playoff game.  Here come the talks of curses, and of the Cubs being the Cubs.  Not here… not close to that point here.  I’m still feeling pretty good about this series overall.  I did predict the Cubs in 5, but I think I will be wrong.  The Cubs will win tomorrow… I mean, tonight.  That is my guarantee.  You see.. I’m not believing in that curse/jinx shit.  I just guaranteed a Cubs win.  I believe… or maybe I’m just so damn tired right now.  Get some sleep; let’s do it again in a few.  Go Cubs!

Nothing is ever easy with the Cubs so why would it start now? All the losing, failed post seasons, and tough roads endured will make the WIN that much sWeeter when it happens.
The Cubs did a great job making bum and the giants work. Unfortunately, they could not push across more runs. We could sit here and second guess maddon’s decisions. We could question if heyward would have caught that ball, or if almora could have caught the last one. Second guessing is easy when things dont go the right way. Even after losing the lead in the 8th, I had a feeling the Cubs were not done…then, KBOOM ties it! Damn that was AWESOME! It set the stage for a dramatic Cubs clincher, but it was not to be. Yes, the demons reared their heads on our Cubs again. Yet somehow, I feel this is different. The Cubs battled their asses off and lost to a team that is now 10-0 in their last 10 elimination games. They will not go easy. Neither will the Cubs. Screw history and everything else. This is our damn year. This is a different Cubs team and season. Rizzo, russell, and others have yet to hit, and the Cubs are still up 2-1. Lesson learned last night. Pressure dealt with and no buckling. Cubs lost but gained in the end. I called this series in 4, and I still feel that way. This young Cubs team is pissed and ready to get last night’s bad taste out of their mouths. Time to open a can of whoop ass tonight Cubbies! Bury these giants once and for all. I believe. I know the Cubs believe. Tonight, they take another step closer to the ultimate goal. This Cubbie blue train did not get derailed last night. It is just picking up steam!
    Bleeding BLUE…CUBBIE true!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
    9W!
