November 7, 2017: J Hey

Congratulations to Jason Heyward for winning another gold glove.  He is awesome on defense; there is no argument there.  His fielding, his throwing, his speed… an elite defender he is.  Is that enough to not want him gone?

Wait, there’s more.  I think he is a huge locker room presence.  Like all members of the 2016 Cubs, he will be forever cherished; he will always have a place in my heart.  His place is a little bigger because of the famous rain delay speech; that single action erased an entire year of offensive failure.  He was worth every single penny we paid him that year because of that one singular moment.  Surely he would be a better hitter next year…

He was…a little bit.  He is still nowhere near the offensive player we expected when we gave him a wheelbarrow full of cash.  With all the talent on the Cubs, his performance makes us want someone else out there.  Come postseason time, he becomes almost a defensive substitution.  We cannot count on him with the bat in his hands.  We couldn’t count on anybody in this year’s NLCS, but this is 2 years running for J Hey.  Where do we go from here?

I don’t think it’s possible to move him anyways.  I mean, who’s going to take on that huge contract?  For the record, I didn’t like that contract from the get go.  It surely seems like we’re stuck with each other. There could be worse things.

Why is it then, that when I saw that the Giants were potentially interested in acquiring Heyward for Shark and Melancon, I got excited.  Someone actually interested in taking Heyward off our hands.  I mean, can’t believe we’re actually considering moving a perennial gold glover with an awesome locker room presence.  I don’t think I’m the only one with this feeling.  The first one that is.

Do you actually think that Heyward is going to live up to the deal in the batters box?  Do you think that with his defense and locker room presence he’s already earning his keep?  Wouldn’t it be great to combine two players into one?  Hello Jason Schwarber, or is it, Kyle Heyward?

I have a lot more faith in Schwarber doing better offensively this year, and although he’ll never be as good as Heyward on defense, is he that bad?  Don’t answer that.  If he could play backup catcher too…  I’m not going to suggest trading Schwarber.  Although that should bring back a substantial get from an AL team, I think that would be a mistake.  Trading Heyward on the other hand…

Yes, I’m all for it.  His offense is too much of a liability, especially come playoff time.  If we could get something of value back for him (I’d be ok with the 2 players from SF), I say pull the trigger.  Or even if we could get prospects, some young arms, while clearing out RF (and cap space) for Bryce in 2019…yep, bye Jason.

I do feel a little guilty feeling that way.  The rain delay speech!!!  Another 2016 member!!!  He even wears my favorite number!!!  Well, it’s not 2016 any more; we have more titles to win.  Somebody else can don that number; my 22 jersey was actually for Prior.  And how many more rain delays in the World Series will there be?  We let Fowler go; I liked him more than Heyward.  If Jake goes too…  Can’t make emotional decisions; it has to be what’s best for the team.  The question is, are the Giants really considering that?  Find out Theo.  Trust in Theo.  Go Cubs!

JHey is an elite defender…no doubt about it. His locker room presence has only grown since his 2016 game 7 speech. Offensively, he is challenged. He is a hole in the Cubs lineup that teams exploit. How long do the Cubs wait before pulling the trigger? I heard the rumor to the gmen for shark and melancon and was all for it. The Cubs have denied the rumor. But where there is smoke, there is usually a fire…to come. I think the Cubs are exploring all options right now. If another team is willing to take all or some of JHey’s contract, thank you. Get some prospects or pitching and call it a day. I will always remember JHey and be grateful for his 2016 contributions, but at the end of the day, Cubs above all. Trust in Theo! Trust in Jed! GO CUBS GO!!!
