November 5, 2022: Another Season in the Books

Saturday brought us the conclusion of another MLB season as the Astros beat the Phillies to win the World Series. I didn’t want the Astros to win it all, but congrats anyways, especially to Dusty Baker. Yeah, 2003 was a long time ago… not too long to still hold a sports grudge, but when we finally got ours in 2016, a lot of old pains were washed away. So yeah, I’m happy for Dusty; glad he finally got one.

Now we turn our attention to the offseason. One of the Chicago teams has already been busy. The Sox already found their new manager. Pedro Grifol will be at the helm for the 2023 White Sox. I didn’t know who the heck he was; I’m sure many Sox fans were in the same boat. I know a lot of them wanted Ozzie, but… I honestly think someone new was the better way to go. Sure, he’s not a big name guy if that’s your thing; he doesn’t have any managing experience. Talk about the complete opposite of Tony LaRussa; that’s a good thing no? You shouldn’t base a new hire on the success/failures of the previous manager; you don’t want to pick somebody completely opposite just because LaRussa was a mistake… did anyone ever acknowledge that? Probably not; probably never will. That ship has sailed, finally; will this new guy be able to guide this Sox team to where they should have been this year, the playoffs? I wonder what other personnel moves will be made; can’t believe the Sox will run out the same roster… they said they weren’t going to throw more money at the problem, so…

Speaking about money, and throwing it, are the Cubs going to keep sitting on their hands this offseason, or will they actually do something about the subpar roster they’re running out there? Certainly have the means to do so; certainly plenty of big name free agents out there to make a splash or two. Watching this postseason was bittersweet. It was great to see some familiar faces on the big stage doing well. We saw Rizzo, Darvish, Castellanos, Robertson, and even famous ex-Cub Martin Maldonado do well; of course there’s Dusty Baker too. The one guy who really did their thing was Kyle Schwarber. I loved seeing him hit bombs in the postseason; I was so happy for him. Yet, at the same time, it was like somebody was twisting a knife in my calf; I was aggravated… I was pissed because the majority of our 2016 Cubs were sent packing. I was pissed because of the team the Cubs fielded this year. I was pissed because I miss that feeling… seeing the fans go crazy… hanging on every pitch… nothing beats it. We need to get back to the postseason ASAP!

We’ll certainly monitor the offseason proceedings; we’ll probably even give the Cubs some help with a plan to sign some of those free agents. But for now, it’s another season in the books; baseball is over. The Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks have our full attention; well, they’ve already had it, but now, no more baseball in the mix. Congrats to the new World Series champs; no asterisk this time eh? Until 2023…
