November 4, 2020: Tony Tony Tony

I can’t believe I haven’t written about this yet… Speaking about another lifetime, the White Sox jumped in the Hot Tub Time Machine and pulled one of their old managers out of retirement to manage this young and upcoming squad. Tony, Tony, Tony… I guess it feels good to the White Sox and their fans… it feels good…. yeah… let me hear you say… uh uh baby…

Wow! I’m shocked. Kind of like when Trump was announced as a presidential candidate back 4 years ago, I thought it was a joke… The White Sox received permission to talk to Tony LaRussa? Why? Are we doing a 37 year anniversary special on the 1983 White Sox? Is there a 30 for 30 on steroids coming up? You know he did manage both the Bash Brothers and McGwire… just saying. But noooo… it was no joke. The Sox actually hired him. I thought the Ventura hire was bad… but hey, maybe Tony has a good 4 years left in him… He is a hall of fame manager after all, the only one to actively manage a team. Maybe he is the old ying to the Sox young yang. Maybe the Sox need a father… grandfather figure to help run the clubhouse. Maybe the Sox will be too talented for this to even matter. I hope so for the sake of Sox fans everywhere.

We also just found out the finalists for AL manager of the year, and yep, you guessed it, Ricky Renteria was on there. Awkward… But OK, we knew a change had to be made; we figured the Sox already had their guy lined up. I guess we were right on both counts. I just can’t understand that out of all the potential managers, HE was determined to be the best one? Did the Sox even seriously interview anybody else? Doubt it. It was like when the Bulls had Hoiberg lined up, and before that Floyd; did LaRussa go to Iowa State?

Look, obviously he’s a great manager; well, he WAS a great manager. Maybe I’m dead wrong on this, but to pull a guy out of retirement… to insert him into a clubhouse that is young and full of swagger… the clash of old school and new school will be on display. Maybe that’s the ying and the yang that the Sox feel they need; maybe it isn’t. It sure got a lot of people talking about the Sox, which is always good for Sox fans’ insecurities. I’m not sure how many Sox supporters are fans of this move or not, but if you are fans, you’re going to ride or die with it regardless. You made it through the Ventura years; not the playing days, those were actually good. Of course, his managerial career, where he took a jump from little league coach to major league manager. It’s not the first move by Reinsdorf that made you go hmmm…

But hey, the Bulls moves seem to be smart… finally. He actually does still care about the Bulls, so that’s cool. His baby is the Sox and he’s brought in the best damn babysitter money could buy… I guess? Good luck?!? At the very least, it will be interesting. With the amount of talent on the Sox, yes they still need more pitching, but the offense is stacked; that’ll get you a bunch of wins anyways. Will Tony be able to supply the extra oomph when it counts that Ricky couldn’t? Stay tuned. Hoping there will be fans in the stadiums next year to see it all go down.
