November 4, 2018: Five and Counting

Checking in on the Blackhawks… do we have to?

Was really looking forward to this week, with the late start times, staying up late to watch some hockey; it wasn’t pretty.  I was battling sleep during the Canucks game; up early, then down and out.  Unfortunately I watched the Oilers game; ugly, ugly game.  Finally, Saturday night was the Flames game; watched it from start to finish… not a happy ending.  That makes five losses in a row for the Blackhawks who stormed out of the gate.  Not good.

I wasn’t crazy about the Keith call early in this one; certainly no intent there.  To get a game misconduct?  Well, it put a Blackhawks defense that isn’t that good to start with behind the 8 ball.  We started the game with about a 7 minute PK.  Yes, the 5 minute major, where the Flames scored one, followed by 2 minutes of confusion, where the Hawks continued to skate with 4 guys.  What is the official rule there?  They should have been allowed to get a guy on the ice regardless if he was coming out of the box or not, right?  Well, the first period actually ended on a high note, with Toews getting his 300th goal, and a nice goal by the D man Rutta.  2-1 after the first felt pretty damn good.

The 2nd period was looking good too after Saad, one of the few guys who has been playing really good during this stretch of 5 losses, bulled his way down the ice and scooted the puck past their goalie.  3-1… feeling good.  As the 2nd period wound down, I wanted to tell the guys… don’t let them score late in the period here; don’t let them grab some of that momentum.  The Hawks give up late period goals too many times; they did again here, with about a minute and a half left; 3-2 after two periods.

Once the 3rd period started, it was pretty clear what needed to happen:  Crow would need to stand on his head to allow us to pull this victory out.  He did… for a while.  But not sure any goalie can be successful for long periods of time with this defense in front of him.  Yes, we were shorthanded… THIS game… but the dam finally burst, and the Flames scored… and scored again… and scored an empty netter.  That last one, although a nice shot by their guy, was pathetic.  We had just drawn a penalty, and with the empty net, had a two man advantage; we could never even get possession of the puck.  I know the power play has been a shit show, but even we were able to score with a 2 man advantage in the first.  With another chance, and the Flames PK not stellar, I thought we had a chance to tie it up, and get at least a point; nope.

It was super frustrating.  We were trying to nurse that lead… making no effort to score in the 3rd… and it came back to haunt us.  The Flames were relentless, yes, and they are a hot team, but this should have yielded some points for the Hawks.  To get zero points out of the 3 game trip is very disheartening.

Where do we go from here?  Well, back home for starters.  Looking to get back on home ice, and get back in the win column.  As I said in a previous blog, the Blackhawks were going to have to win or at least get points early and often this year.  With the division we’re in, things are going to be tough all year.  Is this 5 game losing streak an early knockout blow?  Let’s just end it at 5, and go from there.  Go Hawks!

Love when the Hawks play late. Hate when the Hawks lose. 5 and counting is not good. Keith getting tossed for that hit was BS. Give him a 5 minute major, but in no way was that intentional to hurt that kid. Hawks got screwed and put short handed. That was definitely weird when the power play was done, but the Hawks were still playing with 4 guys for about 2 minutes. Not sure what the official rule on that is. Crow can only do so much in these games. The D has to play better. The power play, like always, is last or near it…always makes me scratch my head. Time to head home and lick the wounds. Would things be quiet until then? Definitely not. More to come. GO HAWKS!!!
