November 30, 2016: Playing Down

posted in: Bulls | 1

Playing down to an opponent… we’ve seen it before.  It’s not just our teams that do it; it happens to a lot of good teams.  Teams underestimate an opponent.  They feel like they don’t have to give it their all; they can coast and still get the win.  Do you think this went through the Bulls head vs the Lakers on Wednesday night at the UC?  Do you think it went through their head when they opened up a big first half lead?  I think so.  How else can you lose to these Lakers missing their best players, playing the 2nd in a back to back night, and being fully rested, 5 days to be exact, yourselves?

Maybe it was too much rest.  I wonder when the next time the Bulls will have 5 days off between games.  Glad you asked.  The only other time they will have this much time between ball games is the All Star break; that’s it.  What a weird scheduling snafu.  But, like DWade said, this should have helped, not hurt the Bulls.  After all, they did come out playing well.

Then, they shifted down a gear.  Yes, the bench mob has been a poor version so far, and they helped start the LA comeback, but overall, the energy was not there after the 1st quarter.  Did the Lakers really do that good a job defensively against Jimmy Butler?  That’s what I was reading.  In his postgame interview, Jimmy acknowledged he was getting double teamed more.  If that was the case, the rest of the NBA should take note.  Focusing your defensive game plan around shutting down Jimmy Butler is the best way to beat the Bulls… Oops, I wasn’t supposed to share that.

Let Wade shoot all day.  Don’t cover Rondo.  Let Niko build a house from three point land.  These are all better options than having Buckets beat you.  He tried in this one too… hitting a big, big shot late in this game to tie it up.  But, when he had his second opportunity, he came up with nothing but air.  A tired Jimmy?  It was an ugly shot for sure.

Maybe I need to give this young Lakers squad coached by Luke Walton some credit?  Nah.  They have got some ways to go, but I do like Randle.  He plays hard.  It’s good that old man Kobe is gone too; they can at least start to build for the future, but I have no love for the Lakers.  None.  So I don’t care if they never build for the future… I wish Kobe was still playing… another year more than he should have.  If the Lakers sucked from here on out, you wouldn’t hear one complaint from me.

But for the Bulls, they need to learn a lesson from this one.  This loss felt like the 2015-16 version of the Bulls.  They lost games all year they should have won.  This Bulls team hasn’t done that thus far.  Let’s try to keep that a habit, and not what happened on this Wednesday night in the UC.  Let’s chalk this up to a fluke, and concentrate on the next game we should win.  Oh wait… next game is against the Cavs.  Interested Bulls fans?  I am.  Let’s bounce back strong.  Go Bulls!

So the Bulls go 4-2 on 6game road trip, get 5 days off, come back home to the UC to play la and lay an egg? Yep, the Bulls may have felt a little too good about their winning trip, especially after they started fine in the first half. Losing games the Bulls should win is not a trend they want to continue. Now, they have the queen and posse coming to the UC. Time to put your big boy pants on Bulls and show yourselves, the league, and us that you can play with the team to beat. GO BULLS!!!
