November 3, 2018: Defensive Battle

It was picture day for our basketball team.  Everybody got their early to take the individual and team snaps.  They got to spend some time together before the start of our game.  Watching the other two teams play, I just shook my head.  2-2 at the half?!?!  Here was the team who scored 22 against us the week before sitting at 2 at the half; dumb luck?  The game ended 10-2 with the team that beat us in the last game getting the win; the team that lost…  we’ll play them next week.  Let’s hope they don’t pour in 20 points against us…

Our opponent for today was our rival if you may.  Last game against them there was a wrestling match between one of our kids and their kids, but that was just the latest chapter.  This was the team in hockey where a kid ran my son over.  Then, the same kid from basketball, slashed a few of our players.  We had an interesting discussion with their coach after that game; the same guy who coaches the team now.  The kid doing most of the damage… his son.  Before the game kicked off, I found out there was more BS from last game; another dad said that same kid punched his kid.  Neither I or the other coach saw that; he said it was off the ball.  Still… not cool.  So, before this game began, I had to put this all out there.  Talked to the guy at the park; he knew.  Told him we weren’t going to have any of this today; he agreed.  I told him I was more than happy to walk over and talk to this other coach with him; he said he had it.  Watched him walk over and talk to him; game time.

It was a clean game for the most part; there was one incident, of course involving my son.  As he was dribbling down the court, the kid bumped into him, sending him flying.  From behind it looked accidental… I picked my son right up, smacked his butt, and told him, you’re OK.  The other coach came onto the court immediately and reprimanded his kid; he made him apologize to my son on the spot.  That’s the way you handle stuff like that.  From there on, like I said, it was clean; it was actually a hard fought, defensive battle.

My son scored our only points for the game.  He poured in 8 points, bringing his season average after 5 games to 7.2 PPG.  Yet, this wasn’t enough, again.  We went down 12-8.  The other team made a nice adjustment in the 3rd quarter.  They started guarding my son off the ball; they had a guy on him the entire time.  It was a really good strategy; it made me proud… my son getting the star treatment and all.  Then I thought, I need to be ready for this.  We need to have a response next time they or any other team pull this.  Time to be a coach.

So yes, 0-5 this year… after the 0-10 season last year for anyone keeping track.  With our baseball team going undefeated this year, I guess this evens things out; I guess it’s good for my son to know both sides of it.  But… next week we face the team that put up 2 points this week; the team we went up 6-0 against last time out… the team we lost to 12-10 with a late bucket.  If we’re going to get a win, this may be our best chance.  Until next week…

Damn, another L vs the rival…sucks! Sounds like a pretty good game, though. Glad things stayed clean for the most part, that’s how it should be for sure, especially at this age. Proud of my nephew for dropping 8 but sounds like he needs a little help on the offensive end. The other team adjusted, and it made the difference. Time to game plan for that in the future and be ready to react. I feel a W coming…very soon. Hopefully, next week! Go TPUPS!
