November 29, 2020: Thanks for Nothing

“Don’t embarrass us”. That’s all I asked for heading into the Bears Sunday Night appearance at Lambeau vs the Packers. Forget about a win; just play hard. Play a good game and let the chips fall where they may. I guess I wasn’t a very good boy this year…

The Bears got wiped, again, on national TV, by the Packers, to the tune of 41-25, and it wasn’t even that close. What’s the problem? Do we just not have enough talent on the field? Is it our preparation, our coaching? Do we just lack the intestinal fortitude to get the job done? Or is the answer D, all of the above? Whatever it is, it ain’t good.

I remember a previous blowout in Green Bay under Trestman’s watch; I wanted to fire the entire team after that one. For whatever reason, I don’t feel the exact same right now; maybe I should. I do think the first problem is the talent on the field, and that falls on Pace; I do think he should be relieved of his duties after this year, or sooner. The plan to pay big money on the defensive side of the ball was fine, but to neglect the offensive line in order to achieve this was not smart. That along with the whole swing and miss at the QB position, are our two biggest problems. I don’t think he should get another chance to get that right. Not bringing in more talent on the OL, expecting a change at offensive line coach would do the trick (a la the Cubs changing their hitting coach), was a huge mistake. I don’t really want to go over the QB mistake again; we know what it is. You cannot screw that up so badly. Heck, to cover his ass, Pace should have made sure there was an OL in front of Mitch to ensure we were seeing exactly what he could do. We think we know he sucks, and probably does, but watch him go somewhere else next year with an OL and do a lot better; that would really be a kick in the balls, although I’m not too worried about that. The talent on the field offensively falls squarely on Pace’s shoulders; bye Ryan.

Our coaching sucks too, right? Sure, you can only do so much with what you got; that is a valid argument. Mitch wasn’t Nagy’s guy. Yet, for someone with supposed offensive play calling prowess, he sure hasn’t lived up to that expectation. Coming off a bye week, we couldn’t even get our shit together. I should have known… I heard the kiss of death before the game: “Mitch had a great week in practice”…. OK Trestman… Should Nagy go? I feel most would say yes. If I had to choose one or the other, it’s clearly Pace. If Nagy went, I wouldn’t be devastated; I’d wouldn’t be furious if he stayed either… TBD Matt.

How about the players’ want to win? When that is getting questioned on national TV, that feels really bad. The one unit we could always count on, let us down big time on Sunday night. What happened to the defense? Yes, I know we were missing Hicks; we have also been missing Goldman all year due to COVID concerns??? Our two big guys up front, really good big guys up front, missing in action took its toll, no doubt. But when I see some of the stuff we did during the game, like Eddie missing another tackle, Kyle running his mouth and not doing a damn thing, Jaylon delivering a great hit, but missing the chance to pick it off so that he could stand over the guy. It’s frustrating as hell. I’m sure the defense is tired of carrying us; I know I’m tired of that too. It certainly wasn’t their best effort. I know there were garbage points in there, but 25 points would have been enough in four of our other losses… think about that. And pressure on the QB??? Supposedly Pagano was more aggressive than Fangio; I haven’t seen it. If we need to subtract on defense to add on offense, especially the line, then so be it; I think it’s justified in some cases; bye Eddie.

So see, I didn’t want to fire everybody. Normally I would be furious right now, but I emotionally detached myself from that game in the 2nd half, starting to multi task before falling asleep in the 4th quarter. I had to… I think all my anger came out the last game after the MNF loss to the Vikes; I’m tapped. Even the Packers kicking our ass again couldn’t get me to that level; am I OK??? The Bears are NOT OK; this year is over. With an eye on next year, plans should start being made. Who will our QB be? Will Pace and/or Nagy be back? Who will we trade on defense? We need to start addressing these questions sooner rather than later. We need to stop embarrassing ourselves on the field; I’m tired of feeling like this. 2018 feels like a decade ago…
