Saw this question on Family Feud the other day: Fill in the blank, Pack of … After cigarettes, came wolves, and yes, cards. I had that answer easily covered, remembering the days of going to Walgreens with my mom and buying a pack of Topps baseball cards with the stick of gum for 40 cents. Geez I’m old…
The sports card game has changed a lot since then. I can’t remember how much I’ve talked about this on here, but… you certainly can’t get a pack for that cheap any longer; you can’t find a pack of cards under $5… Kind of sucks. What used to be a fun hobby has turned into a money making business; so much for the kids enjoying it. Speaking of that money… many cards I taped on my grandmother’s wall paneling upstairs from us back in the day; I specifically remember a 1982 Cal Ripken Jr Topps Future Stars rookie card… that card today would get me about $1,200.
I recently sent in a bunch of the cards that I didn’t tape to the wall; I started getting a bit more serious with my cards in 1985 when I was 9 years old. Using plastic sheets in binders that my dad brought home from the job. I collected a ton of cards between 1985-1990, all sorts… unfortunately, wasn’t into basketball cards the year Jordan came out… $240K for his 1986 Fleer rookie card. Yeah, so I sent 20 cards into PSA for grading, and when I say recently, it was about a year ago; I just “recently” got them back.

Who knew that a typical 90 day turnaround would take a year; who knew that the $12/card I paid to get them graded would skyrocket now. Still, it was nice to finally have some of my cards graded. I got one perfect PSA 10; just sold that Bo Jackson iconic Score card on eBay for $200. Where do we go from here?
Well, we, my brother and I, decided to try to sell them all. It’s only a drop in the bucket as far as what we have; use the funds to send some more in… maybe pick the most valuable ones that are in the best shape… There are certain cards I may not want to part with after getting them graded. I’ve got a ton of MJ cards and have been adding to my Walter Payton collection; figure get those graded at some point, but keep those in the family. As far as the most valuable, we’re looking at Ken Griffey Jr’s Upper Deck, Scottie Pippen, Barry Sanders Score, and Derek Jeter rookie cards; they are all in relatively good shape… I think I’d be OK with selling those…
But back then, I wasn’t thinking about all this, that’s for sure. Besides taping them on the wall, we played with them all the time, either flipping them against each other, sorting them in numeric order, alpha order, and then back to numeric. Lots of fun times from all those years of collecting. Nowadays, you’ll have to have a little more than 40 cents to do that.
