You remember that Dennis Green speech after the Bears came back and beat Arizona on Monday Night Football back in 2006? Those were some good times… and now, his words ring clearly in my head, and they’re as true today as they were when he said them. As far as this Bears team goes, they are who we thought they were.
As the air escapes from the deflated balloon that is the Bears season, I try to figure out how this happened. How did the Bears totally bomb this year? Who saw this coming? I didn’t think THIS is what the Bears would be. Detroit put the finishing touches on our season on this Turkey Day 2014 with a 34-17 demolition of our feeble Bears.
In my mind, the hardest thing to figure out all year is the offense. How could the offense be THIS bad? There’s been some common themes discussed here all year, like questionable play calling, poor decision making, and overall underachievement. This game was no different. How do you play an entire football game with a RB like Matt Forte and only run the ball 5 times? There is absolutely NO excuse for it. I don’t care that the Lions had the #1 run defense in the league. The 13 yards rushing for the Bears this day were the lowest in Thanksgiving Day history, but how many yards to you expect to get if you’re only handing the ball off to your pro bowl RB 5 TIMES!?!? And when did Cutler become so inept at throwing the ball down field? Cutler looked like a dink & dunk QB for most of the game, and most of the year frankly. Here’s big arm, big money, big asshole Jay checking down to short passes on a consistent basis. Are these his first option? Does he give his first option a chance? The OL wasn’t THAT bad… It felt like John Schoop was calling the plays. Who IS calling the plays? Trestman, Kromer, Cutler? All of them need to be lined up for the firing squad. We are in the year 2014 boys, and THIS is the best we got? With this type of talent on the field? That’s why you play the games. That’s why champions aren’t crowned on paper. That’s why this over-hyped Bears team has fallen flat on their face.

And then there’s the defense… Will somebody PLEASE fire Mel Tucker already? Good gracious, the Bears have fielded one of the worst defensive teams in Bears history this year. It’s GD embarrassing! I heard that the Detroit OL had 2 rookies filling in for injured starters. We sure took advantage of that… I thought the defense would be much better this year… I couldn’t have been more wrong. I only wanted a middle of the pack defense. I thought that’s what we would have needed this year with our offense. Unfortunately, we needed a top 3 defense, and got a bottom 3 defense. How do we improve this defense ASAP in the offseason? Better coaching, immediate impact draft picks, and SMART free agent dollars ALL better be thrown at this side of the ball. We’ve invested enough in the offense, with no results. Let’s concentrate on the defense now, while the offense tries to find their ass all summer.
That’s the problem. I’ve said it before: where do we go from here? Well, first thing’s first, we have to play 4 more regular season games that are absolutely meaningless. The Bears have no chance of making the playoffs. That’s 5 out of the last 6 years missing the playoffs with Jay at the helm, and 0-2 for Trestman. I don’t think that combo changes next year, although I wish it did. I’m not sure how you improve personnel wise on the offense… I’m not so sure you should have to. Defense should be the A#1 priority. How about fielding a decent special teams too? Speaking about firing coaches…
The reality bites for this 2014 team. It’s been like a slap in the face, followed up with a backhand. We’ve lost games we should have won, we’ve gotten embarrassed, we’ve lost 2 more to Green Bay, we’ve been beat up. It’s been a tough year to be a Bears fan… It’s tough to watch this team week in week out. They’ve squeezed most of the joy out of this year with their performance; we’ll have to settle for the drops we’ve been given. And… it’s not over yet. Buckle up Bears fans, crash and burn time is in full effect… let’s see the pride this team finishes the season with…

Yes, you do. Get a decent quarterback.
Probably exchange Brandon Marshall for some talent that comes with real leadership as well.

The reality of the Bears not making the playoffs 5 out of 6 years should be more than enough to spark some change, but let me list a few others:
gb continues to beat our ass and embarrass us.
Back2back 50+ point games given up.
A high powered, multi-weapon offense that has disappointed hugely.
A defense that has more holes than the vegas desert.
A coaching staff that is not respected, outcoached every week, shows no in-game adjusting, and has the personality of a wet noodle.
A team that has no heart or pride because they think they are better than they are so they dont work as hard as they should.
An organization that is too afraid to do a damn thing because they are making $ regardless.
So how do these problems get solved? The organization, coaching staff, and players are clueless and are dumbfounded as to how this has happened…”we practice so great.”
I think we need to bring in a football mind as the gm and/or head coach. Someone who knows football and has some fire about them…harbaugh, gruden? Maybe trestman hasnt gotten a fair shake, but who can honestly say he will turn things around? Cut ties after this year and include the rest of the coaching staff…dont let the door hit you on the way out tucker and kromer, 2 useless aholes out of their league. Bring in an oc that knows how to use all of the weapons we have and a dc that will light a fire under its players and get them flying all over the field.
We need to draft for the defensive side of the ball, especially safeties. This Bears team needs a new philosophy and culture change. It seems like some bad habits and views have settled in and need to be shattered. Everyone needs a wake up call! Changes MUST happen…if not now, after this shockingly disapponting season. Losses happen just like not making the playoffs, but definitely not at the rate the Bears have been doing it and more importantly, how it has been happening. We are a blue collar city that loves hard working teams and guys that actually care and give it their all. The attitude this team has along with their heartless effort is totally unacceptable. I want change. We want change. We damn well deserve it!
