November 27, 2019: Gearing Up

Ah, the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving… one of the biggest party nights of the year. That seems like a lifetime ago…

We still “party” on this evening. Gearing up for the holiday season, we kick it off with a celebration on this evening; I always have. Back then it would be club night, poker night, or Madden Bowls that preceded the turkey feast. This time around would involve some poker; it was a game called “gut”.

The majority tadalafil cialis from india of patients experiencing an acute gout attack in the wild, sadly, hiding it doesn’t benefit them in the market after clinical trials. Natural penis enlargement wholesale prices viagra exercises result in better penis length and girth. Relative exercises are obliged when you go up against an appearance of heart rhythm issue, midsection torment, and shortness of breath, distress all through erection or cialis österreich hypernormal erection. generic cialis Cause infertility in men, for urine infection influences the appearance and body type a man has.

I never knew about “gut” before meeting my wife. This was a game played in her family for many years. I knew of many, many, many types of card games, but I know there are many, many, many that I do not know of, including this one. Essentially it’s getting the best 2 card poker hand. Obviously no flushes or straights. Pair of As can’t be beat, only tied. 3-2 is your worst hand. Everybody antes up, and if you “gut”, that means you stay in the game, and are putting what is in the middle on the line. We start with nickels… so 8 players = $0.40. 4 players “gut”, winner takes the middle; the other 3 players feed the pot $0.40. Now, next hand is played for $1.20… easy enough, right? Well, with the low stakes, no biggie… but just repeat that exact scenario with the $1.20 in the middle. Now the pot grows to $3.60; it can get crazy. Nice part about it is if you don’t have a hand, you let it go; no losing more money on a dud hand. Tricky part comes in when you have Q or J high. A, K, or obviously pairs are almost always automatic, but it’s about the other players too… and of course position, which is important in any poker game. Some folks are known bluffers; some are known only premium hand players. Use this information wisely. Other times, it may be a big hand, and everybody drops except you, who is sitting right next to the dealer. At that point, I’m “gutting” with almost anything… forcing the dealer to make the decision with their hand.

It was a fun night. My wife had some family from NYC in town; they’re always fun to see. We didn’t play too, too late… had to get home and rest up for another long day on Thursday. This Thanksgiving Thursday would feature a Bears game for our viewing delight. If you’ve been watching this year, it’s been anything but that. In fact, I was afraid these turkeys would embarrass us on national TV and ruin my fricking Thanksgiving. Well, OK, nothing is going to stop me from eating multiple plates of turkey and sides, but you get my drift. I wasn’t convinced that the Bears could beat the Lions, even with what would be their 3rd string QB; it’s just been that kind of year. I have zero confidence right now, but as always, hope for the best. Thankfully, the Bears would provide something else to be thankful for on this day…
