I’m always looking for tickets… Bulls, Blackhawks, Bears, Cubs, and yes, even Sox. Always looking for that good buy that lines up with a day or night that we can attend. It gets tough during the school year; no night games during the week. So when he has an off day, like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I try to take advantage. Lo and behold, there was a Blackhawks game on Tuesday night at the UC. I had been looking at the Friday afternoon game vs the Avalanche, but those prices were ridiculous. The Tuesday night matchup with the Stars was right in my wheelhouse. Tickets bought; UC here we come!
We actually had his parent teacher conference right before the game. I joked telling him if this doesn’t go well, we’re not going… I knew it would go well, and it did… very well. As my wife drove us to the game, we were beaming with pride in the front seat. I told her “so far so good… let’s not screw this up!” We laughed. Now for game time.
The challenge every game is avoiding spending big bucks on souvenirs. We go in and out of every store, with my son looking at multiple things, and checking their prices; he knows. He definitely is his mother’s son when it comes to shopping, standing there, holding something, hoping I say OK… haha. I generally push back for the first couple stops, telling him, let’s keep looking… let’s go to the bigger store. It worked out well as we ended up buying a $3 pack of hockey cards. He didn’t get any Blackhawks, so he was kind of bummed. We ended up going to the bigger store later in the game. This game would be different. Coming off the good news we received at his school, I knew I would give in to something bigger than normal this time around. I still got off kind of easy. He saw a Pop Up Michael Jordan toy. I cringed thinking how much that sucker would be; only $15! Boom! We’re locked and loaded… now back up to our seats for the 3rd period.

We held off the entire first period, and made sure we didn’t miss much of the 2nd since it was then that the Hawks would be shooting on our side. We did miss some of the 3rd, but returned to see most of it. I never like to miss any of the game while I’m there. When he was younger, that was more of a struggle. As he gets older, we get closer and closer to watching the entire game from our seats. We’ll get there.
We did see Tommy Hawk too… he wanted to go over by him, so we did… and got a great picture of Tommy Hawk putting his beak over my son’s head. That was cool too. It was also cool that the Hawks won the game; last Hawks game we came to they won too. Maybe we need to come to more. At that point, the Hawks were above 500… since then… well, we’ll get to that.
It was a nice night out with the boy above anything. Picking our spots allows us to try to squeeze in as many games as possible with time and money constraints. Next up? Maybe Bulls?
