Now that the regular season is over, we get ready for our playoff showdown on Wednesday December 4th. We will match up with the Timberwolves in the first round.
Obviously happy that every team makes the playoffs; I think it’s fair. Top 2 seeds get the first round bye, while it’s 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5. I thought we were going to see the Warriors again, but nope. The Timberwolves are the team we had beat the first time around. We were up 6-4 late, when they stole the ball a couple times and scored 2 quick baskets for the win. The second time around wasn’t so close. They blew us out, 23-6. That was back on October 30th. What has changed since then?
Well, our team stopped showing up. The leading scorer on our team has not been to a game since. That game vs the Timberwolves back in October was the last game we had all of our players, as other kids have missed sporadically since then. Since then my son has taken over the lead in points, rebounds, and steals for the team. We beat the team we should have beat with a great 4th quarter comeback, and lost to the three teams that have us out-talented on the floor; being short handed didn’t help. So how can we win this game?

Last time around we got killed on the boards; lots of second chance opportunities. That definitely seems like a common theme in our losses, especially without our tallest kid. Other than hoping the kids have grown a few inches since I’ve last saw them, you can’t coach height. One possibility is having another kid play “zone” by the basket. This way there will be 3 kids around the basket, improving our chance for a rebound by 50%. I think that’s the way I have go to. It will mean less ball pressure, but something will have to suffer in an attempt to minimize second chance buckets.
I’m not banking on the tall kid being there. For whatever reason, he has checked out for the season. If he does show up, that’s a big body down low that should help, although he was there last time around vs these guys and that didn’t help much. The other team has a big kid inside & a kid that can shoot and make a 3 pointer. I was joking with my son telling him he’s going to have to do everything in this game…
Yes, the odds are definitely stacked against us. If I were a bookmaker, I would put the line at Bulls +12. I would consider taking the points, but a straight up win??? I believe we can do it; I have to. Now if only the kids believe we can win, we’ll have a chance at pulling a big upset. Wish us luck!!!
