November 23, 2016: The Perfect Mix

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

Wednesday night’s Blackhawks Sharks game was a good one.  Yes, the Hawks lost, but I saw some good things.  I was able to watch most of the game. I can see why the Hawks are number one in the West and why they have a legit shot at that 4th Cup.

We talked a bit about the usual suspects. Through all the salary cap calisthenics, the Hawks still have a number of familiar faces. Toews, who is hopefully ok after getting hurt in this one, is still the captain. Even if he was out for a while, no big deal. Toews gets some rest and the depth gets tested. Kane is still Kane. Keith, Seabs, Hammer, and the return of Brian Campbell are the familiar D men. Hossa playing like he’s back in his prime, Crow as solid as ever, and Kruger, penalty kill expert, are still here.  Bread man is back and awesome. Anisimov has been very good.  Desjardins, Rozy, and Darling round out the returnees.  Then there’s still TVR, who is currently on IR.  We know what we got here. What I’m especially interested in are the new guys.

Some of the newest Hawks draft picks are here.  Tyler Motte, Nick Schmaltz, Ryan Hartman, and Vinnie Hinostroza were drafted this decade.  That’s a good thing considering that statement from last year I believe… where no Bowman draft picks were on the team.  This team, more than any other, has the Bowman draft stamp.  Then there are trades, like Richard Panik and Gustav Forsling… still getting used to some of these guys.  Panik started the season red hot, and is still doing well.  Jordan Tootoo, Dennis Rasmussen, and Michal Kempny were all signed via free agency.  Most of these new guys are the youngest guys on the Hawks; it’s an important infusion of youth on this experienced Hawks squad.

All of the new guys I mentioned besides Tootoo were all born in the 90s, including the youngest Hawk Nick Schmaltz.  He was born in 1995.  Damn, I feel old.  Bread man, Kruger, and TVR all fall in that 90s category too.  It really helps balance out that oldest guy of the bunch, Rozsival, born in 1978.  He’s still younger than me… dammit!  But that’s not the point.

The point is that this Hawks team seems to have the perfect mix.  It’s that mix that blends old with young, experience with first time through, multiple champions with hungry young guns.  It’s still too early to tell if this is truly the perfect mix.  Only that 4th Cup will make that a true statement.  Still, for me, it’s been fun to watch… and I just started really watching due to that whole Cubs thing.  Still loving that.

But it’s the Hawks who showed us the way this decade.  They showed us how to build a team from the ground up.  They showed us how to bring together that perfect mix of guys to complement the core.  They showed us how to master the salary cap era to the tune of 3 Cups.  Have they done it again?

At the very least, this blog helped me personally get more familiar with these new faces.  Much more to come, but my early impression is, this Hawks team will once again be dangerous.  We knew that, but with that infusion of young talent, guys who haven’t done it, guys who should be hungry and are hopefully willing to learn from all the championship experience on this team, this Hawks team appears to be built to be the last team standing.  It’s only November… hopefully, I will look back on this one, and say… yeah, I knew it.  Ready for that long winter grind.  Go Hawks!

The Bhawks definitely did the whole rebuild and culture change the right way. 3 Cups this decade is proof of that, especially with all the cap juggling that has come with it. Q and the core continue to lead the way. Infuse some draftees and other pickups and the Bhawks are ready to make a run for a 4th Cup in 8 years. How aWesome would that be? If the Cubs can follow in the Bhawks footsteps, Chicago could be celebrating much more this decade. The Bhawks have the talent to be the last team standing next year. Stay healthy, focused, and build on a great start! GO HAWKS!!!
