November 23, 2014: Frustration City

The Bears have already made this name appropriate for Chicago this year.  They have frustrated me to a whole new level… a level that I haven’t been in a long time with a team.  Nothing compares to the frustration caused by them, but there’s been some contributions lately from other teams.

The Bulls, after kicking the Clippers’ ass, have looked horrible the past 2 nights.  My regular Bears preview & fantasy picks this past Friday and Saturday, caused me to delay this reaction; I’m glad that it did.  I was pretty pissed.  I’ve come to the conclusion that I hate the Sacramento Kings, especially their new fearless leader DeMarcus Cousins.  They will have a very own Hate File come one day very soon.  We cannot win up there; we cannot win in Portland either.  It’s been 3 years since we’ve won in either place, and it hasn’t been pretty either.  The frustrating part is that we haven’t been playing these teams full strength, aka without Derrick Rose.  It’s these kind of games, these kind of battles, these kinds of road trips, that you want to be standing side by side with your teammates.  These are the games where you bond as a team… where you grow as a team… where you plant seeds for future tough games aka playoff games.  It’s these games where we miss Derrick Rose the most.

These past 2 nights have felt like the past 2 years honestly:  frustrating.  To see Taj go down with an ankle injury, in the same place where Derrick tore his meniscus last year, adds salt to the wound.  He’s been toughing it out, but now, will be out for an extensive amount of time; heck, if Derrick is taking his time, why not Taj too.  The silver lining here is that the Bulls are still 8-5, but the harsh reality sees a very short-handed team with 4 more road games to go on this trip.  I think Nikola will have an opportunity here; he’s been looking better and better.  I was impressed with the way the guys at the end of the bench played for a short time in Portland; they may be called upon even more now.  I’d be happy with a split to end the road trip…

The Blackhawks have contributed some frustration too so far this season.  Barely in the playoffs if they started today, they have to play better, and they have been.  A nice win in Calgary to start their end of the circus trip was a good sign (beautiful goal by 88 btw).   I just don’t want them to continue to hover; they need to play better now, and continue it.  The Western Conference is no joke, and sprinkle a few injuries in, it could be even tougher.  We’ve already seen Sharpie go down and now Van Riemsdyk…  It’s kind of like that mentality that “we’ll be OK”, but that’s the same way I felt vs the Kings in the Conference Finals last year.  We pushed it to the brink, and it ended up costing us the Cup.  Let’s stay focused boys.  It looks like they’re taking some frustration out on Edmonton right now; up 6-0 after 2.  Nice start to the road trip.

How about our baseball teams?  I’m no longer going to talk about last year’s debacle, but let’s look at the offseason so far.  The Cubs have frustrated some, missing out on Russell Martin, and potentially Jon Lester too.  I really liked Martin, but not sure if I liked him to the tune of 5/82.  I really like Lester, but what is his price tag?  At some point, in order to get somebody, the Cubs will have to overpay.  Is that time now?  You can make the argument both ways concerning both Martin and Lester.  I definitely anticipate some new guys joining the squad, besides LaStella, Roach, and CJ Edwards.  They will sign some FAs, and maybe even a trade.  It’s restless times right now, and seeing another marquee FA go off the board like Lester, will add to that.  Patience is a virtue.  Patience is not a good word to use around Cubs fans…

The Sox are about the only team NOT causing frustration at this point.  They made 2 nice moves so far.  Yes, they weren’t blockbusters, but the signing of Zach Duke and Adam LaRoche were nice.  They addressed some of their needs.  They needed to improve their bullpen (still do), and they needed to add a left handed bat.  And don’t compare LaRoche to the other Adam that just left town… way different, and way better.  They have been the more active team so far in town, and they’re assembling some nice pieces.  I think both the Cubs and Sox can compete next year with a little luck…

When does the frustration end?  It ends with winning.  It ends with titles.  I asked the question many times, who would win first between the Cubs and the Sox; I wonder who will win next in Chicago.  I liked our chances across the board, but with one failure pending, it falls on the Bulls and Hawks.  It’s still sooo early.  I still have hiiiigh hopes.  It starts now, not later.  Man, Crawford is looking good tonight, even though the shutout has been broken.  A Blackhawks win tonight helps to ease the frustration; winning is a good thing.  Winning changes everything.
