November 21, 2016: The Ugly

posted in: Bears | 2

It’s got to be rough… covering the Bears in any aspect nowadays.  It has to be especially rough on the game broadcasters.  Forget those guys FOX or CBS put on the game, I’m talking about Joniak and Thayer.  They do such a good job.  I was able to listen to them a lot this Sunday against the Giants.  They really are great to listen to, unfortunately, the product on the field is horrific.  Long way from good, and although they are definitely bad, there is no better way to describe the Bears than The Ugly.

Injuries, injuries, and more injuries… as if the Bears weren’t bad enough.  And now another PED suspension?  Jerrell Freeman is the next to go down for 4 games.  So, arguably the best offensive and best defensive player go down in back to back weeks to 4 game PED suspensions?  Again, the description fits.  And then there’s the whole number thing that I can’t let go.  Wearing 50 with the Bears should not be allowed, and now, to have the guy currently wearing that number, to be suspended for PEDs.  Yep, that’s ugly… and pisses me off.  This is a train wreck.

Sunday actually wasn’t too bad.  The Bears actually had a chance to win the game.  Yet, for all the game winners you Jay supporters can find, how many times has he ended our chances with a turnover?  An interception on the potential game winning drive sealed our fate this Sunday.  Maybe I should be happy.

I don’t think anyone will catch the 0-11 Browns, although the 1-9 Niners are pretty bad too.  But at 2-8, both the Jaguars and the Bears battle for the 3rd draft pick this upcoming offseason.  I actually read a little bit about the QBs coming out this year in the Tribune; yes, I still read the paper from time to time.  They talked about Kizer, Watson, and the NC QB.  Not sure if there are any can’t miss prospects, but there are certainly a number of them, even after this initial three.  For all the past years I’ve wanted to see the Bears draft a QB, I think I’ll finally get my wish this year.  However, I’m sure the Browns and Niners will both be looking to do the same, and with the current standings, we’re getting the 3rd best.  Isn’t there anybody else that can get suspended?

We really need to make a push to move up.  We control our own destiny, as we play the Niners later this year.  We could move up to #2!  Yet, as we watch, as I watch, there is no way possible, it doesn’t exist in my DNA, for me to root for the Bears to lose.  That’s why it was so screwed up when I used to bet against the Bears… that was rough.  The whole head vs heart thing comes into play this year too.  The head tells me I hope the Bears finish 2-14; my heart doesn’t agree.

So yeah, I’m still watching the Bears.  And yeah, I’m still wearing Bears gear.  Do you think a rough season…. OK, a rough decade… OK, so most of my life after the 85 Bears will make me stop supporting MY team?  I live and die with them.  I’m with the Bears through the good and bad times.  It’s a badge of honor for all us die hards to support our teams through the ugliness; screw the bandwagoners.  I’m not going anywhere.  Everybody else can get back to whatever else they do on Sundays like going to Bed, Bath, and Beyond or cleaning their gutters, but not me.  Yes, maybe I’m not stuck on my sofa, but I’m definitely paying attention to the game, whether in the car or on the TV.  And yes, I’m still wearing my Bears ski cap.  Do you think I’m only going to wear my Cubs gear now because they won?  I will still wear all my Chicago sports gear, even the Bears, even in these ugly days.

I wish I had a better story to tell about them.  I can only hope that will change one day.  Just as I’m so happy for my son that the Cubs won, and they will be winners in his eyes, I fear the opposite for the Bears.  Actually, anybody who was not around to see the 85 Bears that we still hold on to falls in that boat.  I remember my Raider friend, telling me how hard it was to get his son to watch the games with him through the lean years in Oakland.  Well, now, it’s paying off for him and his son.  I figure I have a couple more years until I worry about that with my boy.  The only Chicago sporting event that he hasn’t been to is a Bears game.  I’m waiting for him to be old enough to remember his 1st game.  Not sure I can wait for the Bears to be good again.  Here’s hoping it’s soon…  or maybe I should just take advantage of the cheap tickets…  Bear Down.

And why do they have to suck the same year as the packers? And why do they have to suck the same year the division is there for the taking?

The Bears are bad. There is not enough talent, period. Throw injuries and suspensions on top of that, and you end up with a 2-8 team that may not win another game this year. If that means landing a top qb to turn this franchise around, so be it, because that is what is needed. Pace and fox regime is off to a bad start. How long will they last? Is there a light at the end of this tunnel? This is going to be 6 straight years of the Bears not making the playoffs…completely unacceptable! Do whatever it takes to get this team on the quickest road to success. Blow it up, rebuild, draft smart, and do it as fast as possible. Unfortunately, Bears fans feel like they have been going through a rebuild for the past 6 years. When is it going to get better? Definitely not these last 6 games, or 6 years for that matter! No matter how bleak, BEAR DOWN!!!
