November 20, 2020: Bye Week Blues

posted in: Bears | 0

We made it… barely. The Bears limp into the bye week losing 4 in a row, looking like they may not win another game the rest of the year. Talk about the story of two halves of the season thus far. 4-1 in the first 5 games were met with 1-4 in the next 5; it all adds up to a 500 record. If the Bears record was 5-5, but the two parts of the first half were switched, we’d feel a whole hell of a lot better. Instead, I think we’re all feeling the bye week blues…

Here’s how I saw the first half of the season playing out in my September 8th season preview blog:

Week 1 at Detroit: WIN… Correct!

Week 2 vs New York Giants: WIN…. Correct!

Week 3 at Atlanta: WIN… Correct!

Week 4 vs Indianapolis: LOSS… Correct!

Week 5 vs Tampa Bay: WIN… Correct!

Week 6 at Carolina: WIN… Correct!

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I was right about every game except one. I had the Bears at 6-4 at the bye week; I was oh so close. I’m kind of shocked, because I usually suck at picking games number one. Number two, I usually always inflate the Bears record because my damn positive attitude and never ending faith in them. Well, I only inflated their record by 1 game up until this point. I think when the Bears resume play after the bye week is where we’ll see a big difference. I picked them to finish 10-6 on the season, or 4-2 after the bye week. Since I was off by a game, I need the Bears to finish 5-1 to make that 10-6 record, which would most likely be good enough for the playoffs. It ain’t going to happen. In fact, I keep hearing my brother in law’s voice in my head telling me they will not win another game this year. I scoffed when he said that, but you know what, that’s a lot more likely than 5-1 at this point. Most likely, the result will be somewhere in between.

At this point, I’m feeling absolutely no Bears mojo. That Monday night loss completely zapped it out. I know once they take the field again, especially against who they’ll be playing, I’ll feel the fire once again, trusting that our defense will keep us in games like they’ve done all year. Trusting that we will have something to cheer about when the defense takes the field. Believing that our defense is still great, and seeing those results on the field. That’s where my faith begins and ends with this team. It’s an all too familiar story.

Yet funny enough, if the Bears were to somehow beat the Packers in their return, the mojo would come rushing back like the breaking of a dam. There were seasons in those lean years, when all we hoped for was a 2-14 record, as long as those wins came against the Packers. Right about now, I’m feeling that. If the Bears went 2-4 the rest of the season, but those wins were against the Pack, I would be satisfied. I’m only asking for 2 more wins the rest of the season… come on…
