As the 4-10 Bulls head into a match up with the 4-9 Pistons tonight at the UC, I wonder what the hell is wrong with them. 27 wins in 2017-2018, 22 wins last year, on pace for 23 wins so far this year; I’m so damn tired of this crap. OK, maybe last year was a bit optimistic on my part, thinking they would certainly be better than the previous year. But come on… this year?!?! Was I crazy like Boylen to think this team could make the playoffs?
Boylen… there’s a name for you. As you know, he took over for Fredberg last year, and finished the season with a 17-41 record. Obviously, GarPax were impressed by this, and extended his contract; really? He was already under contract for this year; why not let him coach it out? At 4-10 so far, I think our decision could be a bit easier. But no… we went ahead and extended him like idiots. I’m not saying Boylen should be gone right now, although many think that is the problem. All I’m saying is if this year was his big shot, and if this year keeps going the way it is going, show his ass the door. But now, we’ve committed to him?
What point would be good to fire him? Do we give this thing to the All Star Break? Do you let him coach out the year? Is the young talent too important on this team for Boylen to ruin that we just fire him now? Maybe you don’t think the main issue is Boylen; I’m not sure myself. He’s definitely part of the problem; that’s easy. What is the problem?
Let’s start with Lavine and Markkanen. Here were 2 guys acquired in the Butler trade that were supposed to be as good or better than Butler, eventually. I thought this would be the year these guys take that step up, and play next level basketball. It was their time to become the “superstars” on our team. Lavine has shown flashes; he always has. I think that’s what his nickname should be: Flash. It’s better than “The Bad Decision Maker”. Maybe Zach could be one of those stars you need on a team, but he’s definitely not a #1. If you still believe he can be that, great; I understand why. At times, he can get to the rim at will. At times, he flies through the air with ease. At times, he makes the most difficult shot look easy. Then there’s the flip side of it. He doesn’t seem to fit into any offensive plan other than take the ball and shoot it within 5 seconds or hold it for 20 seconds then shoot; that’s it. Far cry from the Triangle Offense. His defense is atrocious. I’ll quote some updated figures from Mark Strotman: The Bulls are 18.8 points per 100 possessions worse defensively when Zach Lavine is on the floor. So much for proving us wrong Zach.

If there was one guy I thought could be THE guy, I thought it would be him. What is wrong with him right now? He’s not a spot up shooter; he can be, but he’s so much more than that. With his 7 foot ass, he should be making his money on the blocks; the offense should be run through him. What offense are we running again? He looks like he’s lost out there at times; he looks like he’s lost his confidence too. Surely he will play better… right?
Is the lack of progression from these 2 players on Boylen? I referenced the offense we’re running; it’s similar to the rest of the NBA which is drive to the basket, pass up open 2 point shot, pass until you find an open 3 point shooter, and shoot X % from behind the arc; sometimes you’re making them, sometimes you’re not. Whatever… it’s stupid. Is Boylen really putting his 2 “stars” in the best position to succeed? Is Boylen really making smart coaching decisions? How about Gafford who finally saw the court; no need to make the FREE GAFFORD shirts. He looked great; it only took 13 games to get him in there. Is that on Boylen? If so, what about Valentine who hasn’t seen the court either?
I wanted to give Boylen a shot; not an extension, but THIS year. I didn’t want to write him off as a lost cause after last year’s debacle once he took over. I was up for anybody but Fredberg… but maybe this anybody isn’t the right body… Maybe GarPax made another bad decision; that’s not too hard to believe. And yes, I do think there are a lot of young, talented players on this Bulls team. If we don’t see progress soon, maybe it is time to look at the coach as the problem, if you aren’t already. Maybe it will be time to find another coach. Or maybe they’ll keep him in that job going forward, since the Bulls record & performance on the court doesn’t really dictate whether somebody has a job or not. Need to start seeing some progress… soon. Go Bulls!
