November 20, 2017: Wide Right

posted in: Bears | 2

Lining up for that game tying/game winning FG is always nerve wracking.  I’ve gotten down on my knees before, hoping the kick would go in.  Sometimes it does… sometimes it doesn’t.  Most times it’s at least close.  Sunday’s Bears game was NOT most times.

The kick was wide right by what seemed like 10 yards.  It never had a chance.  I can only remember one other kick being this far off…

Do you remember that year the Colts and Steelers met in the playoffs?  The year that Mike Vanderjagt was like perfect kicking FGs.  Yeah, it was a crazy game; it may have been right before the Bears Panthers game.  I was getting loaded already.  There was a fumble.. I think Big Ben tackled somebody to save the game.  Then there came the winning FG attempt by a guy who doesn’t miss.  Do you remember that one?

Anyways, he kicked the ball like straight to the right.  I’m sorry, but there is no way you can miss a kick that badly.  There is only one explanation… the fix was in.  Papa Vegas got him in his clutches, and made the call… miss it.  No chances taken.  Game over.  Mikey boy was on the take… or saved his own tail by that horrifically missed kick.  There is just no other logical explanation.

That brings me to Barth.  He’s not exactly Vanderjagt… he’s missed a number of kicks.  He should have been gone… hold on, he never should have been here period!  Letting Robbie Gould go was a stupid ass mistake.  But Barth is still a professional kicker… maybe I just haven’t seen kicks missed this badly, maybe it happens more than I think it does, but this kick didn’t even have a chance.  You knew the millisecond after it was kicked that it had absolutely NO chance of going in.  Fixed?

I’ll say you never know.  Maybe it’s all rigged in one way or another.  Maybe Fox was told before this year that it would be his last; maybe he’ll get a nice golden parachute on the way out if he shuts his damn mouth and keeps blowing smoke up our ass about everything from injuries to who’s starting.  Maybe he was told that Mitch was NOT to start until he was told it was OK.  Maybe we knew that time would come soon because of our really difficult start to the season.  Maybe we knew we were setting up Glennon to fail, and felt OK about it because we overpaid his ass anyways.  Maybe we are purposely tying the hands of Trubisky, and doing stupid stuff like not involving Tarik in the offense, or not having him, Howard, and Inman in there on the last drive.  Maybe we want to be good enough to show progress… to show the world that Mitch is the real deal, but not good enough to win any solid number of games… not this year.  Maybe this is because we want to get as high a draft pick as possible to nab a big time WR, so we secretly stack the deck… and keep a kicker like Barth around just for THIS moment.  With the loss, we are now zoning in on that top 10 pick.  With the game next week in Philly, I don’t think we could win even if we tried; now how do we lose to Cleveland & San Francisco?

I don’t know… it’s frustrating as hell.  If that’s the grand plan, and it all works out to a Super Bowl victory in 1-3 years, OK.  To see incompetent coaching and incompetent FG kickers try to stunt our growth as a football team, you have to ask questions… you want some answers.  Fox and crew didn’t get canned after the GB loss; Barth is now gone after his kick sailed towards the sidelines.  Who’s next?

Is it Pace pulling all these strings behind the scenes?  Because he sure isn’t innocent in this whole thing.  Will they just keep pinning it on scapegoats like Barth… and Fox and crew?  Well, that’s fine, but those buffers will soon be all gone, and it will be ALL on Pace.  Feel like I’m rambling now.  Anyways… not so pissed at this particular moment… happy Barth is gone; I like that instant decision.  Ready to stop all this messing around whatever it may be and get to being a good team again.  It feels like we’re close… I’m hoping I’m right.  Don’t get hurt Mitch.  Bear Down!!!

Barf is finally gone…too bad it is long overdue. This guy missed the game tying field goal that never even had a chance. I mean, how do you miss that bad? And then his post game comments, it is what it is…really? Glad you’re gone! Some others should be following your weak leg. MTru played well aside from that fumbled snap. What a run on 4th down late to get that first and set up the field goal attempt! Exactly what the Bears need at times, a running qb, especially now with limited weapons at wr. How about another stupid ass penalty from long? Not sure about him, but maybe his days should be numbered, too. He has been injury prone and obviously not the brightest of linemen. Howard was a beast like he usually is while the Bears finally managed to get Cohen some touches…how’d that work out? Oh yeah, a sweet td run along with other positive plays…not that hard dowell! Seems like the status quo the last few years, the Bears keep things close and manage to lose any tight game, which is the difference between a good team and mediocrity. I do feel the Bears are close. This year will be an improvement from last but should not be enough to keep fox around. This better be the last year the Bears have no shot at the playoffs. Next year, pace and the Bears should be playoff bound or bust, and everybody’s job should be on the line. Losing sucks. Close losses suck even more. Now the Bears march into philly against the best team in the league…oh boy. I’m figuring a closer game than expected with a familiar result. BEAR DOWN!!!

How hard is it to kick a FG? Wide right should be tattooed on his forehead. Bears are not that far away, so firing John Fox would be a bad move. You finally have the team coming together. QB is good and will only get better, you have got the RB 1 and 2 punch. The offensive line needs some young legs, the secondary needs another veteran and you need an A1 receiver….all of those spots can be filled by draft day. Bears are headed in the right direction, don’t micro-manage. Fox is doing the best he can with what he has got. I’m not a big fan of Fox, but give him one more year and go after an experienced OC. BEAR DOWN!
