For a Chicago sports fan, these last 2 nights have sucked. No Bulls games OR Blackhawks games for 2 consecutive nights; that’s insane! November 18 & 19 are the first of only four occasions like this throughout the entire basketball and hockey season. I hope you were able to get some stuff done these past 2 nights.
I’m going to give you a heads up, and list the next 3 times this will happen. I’m also going to give you some ideas of how to take advantage of these situations. Maybe we can accomplish something productive…
December 7 & 8: Get some early Christmas shopping done, because you won’t get another consecutive night off from the Bulls and Hawks again prior to Christmas. Start planning now, it’s a Sunday and Monday (no Bears game to worry about either!). Take a vacation day on Monday, hit the stores, and get your stuff done. Then you can sit back and enjoy the flurry of games that will be shown throughout the rest of the December without having to race out and buy your wife that last minute gift.
February 1 & 2: Another Sunday-Monday without the UC boys. Take advantage. Take a mini vacation with the family. Wait, the Super Bowl is on February 1st. Scratch that… unless of course it’s the Broncos and Packers, a Super Bowl I wouldn’t watch. The last Super Bowl I didn’t watch was Green Bay vs Pittsburgh… In that case, I AM taking that road trip, and you should too. In fact, take your family to Mall of America. Why you ask? Because your wife will love it! Oh yeah, also when the Hawks resume action on February 3rd, it will be in Minnesota. How convenient… you would have purchased the tickets in advance for this “surprise” turn of events of course.
February 16 & 17: This time it’s a Monday-Tuesday just coming off of NBA all star weekend. Why did I mention that? Not sure, because I don’t think anybody gives a crap about that exhibition game. How about you decide to surprise your significant other and take her out one of these nights??? You know, forget waiting in lines, or packing in some crowded restaurant, and just go out a couple days AFTER Valentine’s Day. Better yet, give her those dozen roses then too… they’ll be half the price they were on Valentine’s Day. I’m saving you money too now!

So see, I’m looking out for you… looking out for us. I’m going to plug these dates in now, and make the most of it. With 2 good teams to watch throughout the winter, I want to miss as little of the action as I can. Speaking of missing action… what do you fear missing most when you can’t watch a game?
I dread missing the huge comeback. You start watching the game, and they’re in a big hole. You pass out… You wake up, and they’ve just completed an unforgettable comeback… and you were sleeping. Damn! I also dread missing the great individual performance. That happened to me this year with the Cubs and Baez’ debut. I fell asleep and missed his tremendous debut. I had to listen to everybody talk about it all day the following day on the radio and settle for watching highlights. That sucked.
You want to be there for every moment of the season. You want to know your team inside and out; REALLY know what’s happening on the court and the ice. It’s the little things that you enjoy when watching them play. You notice an up and comer. You notice a veteran still giving tremendous effort. You notice how the coaches make in-game adjustments. At the end of the year, during the playoffs, you can remember that tough win in December or that tremendous comeback in January. You know when the pivotal points of the season are, and are happy to have witnessed it first hand. You’ll know every up, and every down, of this great roller coaster ride. When it’s all said and done, you would have been there through it all.
Well, that’s the pie in the sky philosophy of course. Busy lives make this difficult even for the most super of fans, like us. It’s still worth trying though. A little preparation goes a long way… so plan now, and take advantage of these consecutive nights without either team. It will pay off in the long run… for everybody.

NCAA Basketball Marathon was on TV. Plenty to watch. 24 hours of consecutive games.

Are you in the doghouse or something? The recurring theme here seems to be making up for something! While it’s never a bad thing to be nice, certainly makes day-to-day living better if things are rolling along smoothly.
I did notice that there’s been no Bulls or Hawks the last 2 nights. But they did replay the NW/ND game! That was fun to watch, especially the final outcome! Comcast had a full hour on Walter Payton on Tuesday night, so that helped then.
