November 18, 2021: What’s In a Win

What is it all for? This thing we call life… I mean, sports. The goal is winning it all, right? Everything that is done should be with that ultimate goal in mind. Thing is, there is no perfect formula. Also, every other team playing the game is trying to do the same thing. You have injuries that happen, can’t miss prospects or free agent acquisitions that miss. There’s a component of luck and timing. There’s any number of things that can happen outside of the week to week, day to day, that could sway things one way or another. There is both the physical and mental aspect to deal with. I could go on and on… winning is not easy… winning it all is not easy.

So we celebrate the small wins, those regular season wins that most teams, unless you’re the Lions, experience from time to time. Does a win in Week 3 guarantee anything in the long run? No. But it sure as hell feels good to win that week, doesn’t it? It doesn’t mean that your team is perfect, that they will never lose again. It doesn’t mean that there aren’t still problems that need to be addressed. But if you had to stop and fix every single problem with the focus on “winning it all”, there’d be a lot of losing involved, right? Plus, there is no guarantee that all the changes you’re making will lead to the ultimate goal. There has to be some sort of balance.

Take the Cubs for example. How many years did we wait to see it all? How many ever years we were alive at that time in 2016. All that losing… yet still, how many wins happened over those years? How many great moments? Just because we never won it all, doesn’t mean being a Cubs fan wasn’t rewarding. Still, everybody wants to win it all… at least once in a while… like the Bears 1 Super Bowl in my lifetime. But, it’s hard for me to complain. I saw 6 NBA titles in 8 years; I saw 3 Stanley Cups in 6 years. That’s not too shabby…

Had a conversation earlier this week on Twitter about the Cubs, and what has transpired over the past year. This is a perfect example. For the first time in our lives, the Cubs won it all; I just mentioned that… I like to mention it. But that wasn’t it. That Cubs team made the playoffs more times than I’ve ever seen before in my lifetime. Yet, that wasn’t good enough, was it? But per Jed’s comments this week, he sees the value of making the tournament??? I’m confused. Yes, winning it all IS the goal, but… you can’t win it all if you don’t make the playoffs, so… and we were doing that… and now we’re not… but we will again… some day… and that day, we will be built to win it all and not just make the playoffs, right? All righty then… glad that’s settled.

I guess what I’m saying is, enjoy the small wins; every win is a good win. Don’t get too caught up about how lucky we were to win this or that, how it won’t last, how we’d rather lose than win… never understood that. Winning it all starts with 1 win; if you don’t win 1 game, you can’t win it all. If you don’t win multiple games, if you don’t make the playoffs, you can’t bring the title home. So… enjoy every victory, and if we’re lucky, that one win will turn into many, will turn into a playoff run, and if we’re really lucky, we’ll get hot at the right time and bring another title home to Chicago. Which team will do that for us next? Any one will do… now let’s go get some more wins…
