November 17, 2020: Morning After

posted in: Bears | 0

I couldn’t go to sleep last night; that’s a rarity for me. I was so pissed off. I was looking up and down Twitter in a bad frame of mind. Thankfully, I didn’t say anything too stupid outside of my response to Matt Leinart’s comment about the Bears play calling. I asked him if he was still getting checks from USC. Anyways, today, the morning after, I’m still feeling the same. If only I could take a pill and erase what happened last night…

1 touchdown… can’t even muster up 1 touchdown. Even the worst teams with the worst QBs on their worst days can get the ball across the goal line one time. The really sad part about it, is that’s all it would have taken to win this game. The really sad part about all of it, is how good the defense is playing. Sure, the D gave up 2 TDs… I like Buster Skrine, but he was no match for Theilen in the slot. Giving up 2 TDs should be more than enough to win. The defense held down one of the best running backs in the league, in back to back weeks now. For a defense that didn’t look good against the run out of the gate, they’ve improved dramatically. It did hurt when Hicks went out of the game though… We’re already missing Goldman. Regardless, the defense is, as usual, Super Bowl ready. The offense…

My fantasy of the offense finally getting their shit together so this team can go somewhere is over. It ain’t happening. There may be a flash here or there, but this isn’t getting any better this year. We need change, and not just who is actually sending in the plays in this crappy ass offense. We’ve had one of the lowest paid offensive lines in the league… you ever hear you get what you pay for. There are pieces… that can survive the overhaul that is necessary, but an overhaul IS necessary. Again, I look to the top, and the guy that we will be counting on to select our “QB of the future”, because newsflash, that guy is not on our roster today. Whether it’s signing a free agent, whether it’s drafting another guy, or both, which will be what is required for next year, we need somebody we can trust to make the right call. Pace had his chance; he blew it. Does he deserve another chance? Can we afford to trust him again? My answer is no.

It starts with the QB, but it certainly does not end there. Whitehair and Daniels are probably the only salvageable pieces of that line that Pace has put together. Again, we need a guy who can build an offensive line that can block on a consistent basis. Do we rely on Pace to do this? I thought he was already gone… And yes, does this mean we will be subtracting from the defensive side of the ball to make the dollars work? Maybe. Building an offense that is functional shouldn’t be this hard, should it? Well, we don’t need any reminders of the Bears history at the QB position; unfortunately, it starts and ends there. When will we break out of this generational rut? You remember the offensive line we had in 85? Heck, even the guys we had in 2006? Yeah, that matters too.

It’s not rocket science. Why can’t the Bears get this right? And what does all this mean for Coach Nagy? Is it his fault the pieces he’s been given to work with on this roster on the offensive side of the ball have been “lacking”? You would think his “wisdom” on the offensive side of the ball would still be able to make a difference; it hasn’t. Is the talent that bad? At QB & OL, yes. Has his play calling helped things? No. I think I’m 50-50 with Nagy, but 100% on Pace going… but Pace did hire him, right? Either way at this point…

I’d like to say I’m done talking about this, but we all know that isn’t true. The last month has been brutal for the Bears; the next 11 days will be worse… And oh yeah, we return to another national TV audience on Sunday night vs none other than the cheese scum… Can’t wait…
