November 17, 2016: Bears Down

posted in: Bears | 1

As if it couldn’t get any worse for our Bears…  Kyle Long out for the year.  Alshon Jeffery suspended 4 games for PED use.  The battle cry has shifted from Bear Down to Bears Down.

It really doesn’t matter in the big scheme of things.  It actually may help.  Nobody wants to tank, and yes, I hate losing, but… it’s almost destined for the Bears to finish with a top 5 pick this year.  These recent events only help that cause.  Now to bench Cutler and start Barkley.  It may not be pretty, but at least we get to see what we have in Barkley… unless we already know.  We know what we have in Cutler…

I think we know what we have in Long too.  So.. rest up Kyle.  Maybe next year we’ll be better.  Is that the new mantra for the Bears?  Have the Cubs finally passed that on to another team?  I’m glad the Cubs finally did it, but I certainly don’t want the Bears to go on a record drought.

And then there’s Alshon.  I’m sorry, but there is no excuse for that.  Whether or not he was trying to cheat, or he was just too damn stupid to realize it, it doesn’t matter.  He won’t be on the field for another 4 games.  Bad enough this guy has missed so much time for injuries in the previous years.  Bad enough this guy barely sees the end zone any more.  Now, 4 games due to a PED suspension?  The Bears were smart to tag him last year.  Based on what I’m seeing, there is no way the Bears should sign him to a long term deal.  Are we able to tag him again?  If so, I would do that… maybe.  I mean, if this guy can ever put a full season together… but then again, who will be throwing the ball to him?

It’s very likely that somebody will be a rookie next year.  Like I had to follow the minors during the 100 loss years for the Cubs, I have to check into the top NCAA QBs, getting ready, hoping the Bears draft one.  They should have drafted one years ago.  For how smart everybody thinks they are, nobody seemed to get this concept.

At least Pace acquired a decent backup… but that’s a short term plan.  Fox and Pace knew Cutler was a short term plan too.  What is the long term plan?  It hasn’t been addressed.  Unless this is it… completely bottom out, get a top 3-5 pick, and grab one of the best QBs in the nation.  And hope… hope that you hit on that pick, because there certainly are enough busts to go around.  Not many rookie QBs make an immediate impact.  I remember Big Ben doing so, and this year, we see Wentz and Prescott; Goff will be starting this weekend.  The Bears need to hit on that pick.  That’s the only way it will get better soon… or is there another?

That Prescott kid in Dallas has pushed Romo to the bench, or should I say, kept him there after his return from injury.  Romo will NOT be a Cowboy next year.  Does he have any years left in him?  Maybe the Bears get him… I’m fine with that.  But, BUT.. they still need to DRAFT a QB.  Romo would be another short term plan.  Maybe Pace will want him since they were college football teammates at EIU; fine.  Still, DRAFT A QB.  This is our chance.  I certainly don’t ever want to be this bad again.  This is our chance to strike it big.

There are young pieces in place on the defense, and few others on offense, but it’s no secret, this Bears team needs a lot of help.  But to neglect the most important position in all of sports has been a horrible misstep; they can’t do it again.  So if we have to take one on the chin, repeatedly this year, for the end game to be drafting a top QB.. it may all be worth it.  One day, I hope to look back on this, and confirm my thinking.  I can’t keep going through year after year with no playoffs… for the Bears!?!?  OUR Bears!?!  A charter franchise in the NFL.  It’s horrible and painful.  It’s true the Bears are down… we’ve been down.  Is the day darkest before the light?  It’s pretty damn dark… there has to be some light coming.  Still Bearing Down…

Bears continue to lose guys and are nowhere near good enough to overcome it. The talent is not there on O or D, let alone depth wise when guys go down.
One guy who needs to go is jay…enough is enough. He tricked the Bears into signing him to a 7 year deal in 2014. How much longer can the Bears let this guy drag them down? A good game here, a bad game there. No consistenty other than turning the ball over. The Bears are going nowhere with jay in charge. Finish this year poorly and draft a qb that can turn this franchise around. Bears down and have been. Blow this team up, start fresh, mirror the Bhawks and Cubs rebuilds, and get this once great franchise back to respectability and beyond!
