I’m supposed to feel happy about this Bears win right? Why is it that I don’t? Why is it that I believe there are only a handful of teams that the Bears could have beaten this Sunday, and Minnesota just happened to be one of them? There were some good things that happened…
Jay Cutler played well. He’s always been an OK guy from a fantasy perspective, you know, putting up numbers. Well, this time he put up over 300 yards of passing AND connected for 3 TDs. Yeah, there was that one baaaad INT, but that just something we have to overcome every game. He took advantage of the “best WR combo in the league”. We finally figured out a way to use their size, and they came through with all 3 of the TDs. Matt Forte was Matt Forte, yet still we only put up 21 points…. Thankfully, it was enough to stop the bleeding.
Our defense played well. We didn’t let anybody on the Vikings have a career day. Boy did they look horrible out there. Rookie QB, rookie RB coupled with underachieving Cordarelle and the cast of no name WRs. Oh wait, there’s Old Spice boy Greg Jennings who is still collecting a paycheck. The defense did what we should have done against this team, and hold them down. That was nice of them.
How about that special teams play? I’m surprised more teams don’t do that against us. Wait, they’re usually up by 3 TDs and have no need to. That was a sweet play, and we had no idea. The fact that special teams is SO bad on this team doesn’t help our cause, and it hasn’t all year. Again, it’s just something we have to overcome every week, and this week, we did. Heck, even Robbie Gould missed a FG…

So let’s celebrate the Bears win… the first of seven in a row to sneak in the playoffs. Pump those brakes. I’m happy with any W at this point, trust me… I just can’t get too excited about it. There’s been too much pain already. We’ve been beaten down so badly, that it’s hard to get pumped up about getting one punch in. Nevertheless, we sit at 4-6 with another game against a subpar opponent in Tampa Bay next week. The only difference is, there’s probably a couple guys over there that will have something to play for.
Couple gripes about yesterday… The end of the first half decision to eat it. It’s like we were satisfied, and almost relieved, to be winning a game, that we just figured we shouldn’t push it. We had a minute in a half if my memory serves me correct. We were only up 4 points!!! That just shows the confidence Trestman has in Cutler, or maybe it shows that Trestman has no balls. Both answers are probably correct. As far as going for it on those 4th downs and those Trestman balls, I like BOTH of the decisions. We need to make those type of decisions from here on out. The only problem I have is the play call on the first one… a QB sweep? We have 100s of plays in our playbook, and THAT’s what we settled on. Another thing, how weird was it to watch that game without a clock? It’s hard to believe that they couldn’t get it fixed, or that CBS couldn’t get the time up there somehow. Another thing, this game was THAT bad it had to be moved to CBS… 2 NFC teams… what’s up with that?
OK, let me just be happy for a week. We reached the 4 win total… YAY! We beat a team we should have beaten… YAY! I’ll put that thought about this game, and this season, being nothing but an empty promise to the side for now… at least for a week. I’m not quite sure we can repeat this feat next week, but I haven’t said this in a while…. Bears win! That still feels good to say.

You are correct in the ”2-minute drill’, or lack thereof! What was up with that? And those repeated short-yardage dives into the middle of the line……basically the waste of a play. Sure one of them worked, but then the Forte sweep went for 4 or 5 yards each time when we only needed one.
Again, questionable play-calling, poor time-management, and just slipping back to the ‘we’re ahead, let’s just play not to lose now’ mentality from Trestman.
We should have put up at least 2 more scores on this team.
A nice win, but not really a confidence builder……………

Marshall and Cutler had good games. Remove the cancer. Trade them now!

Your sentiment generally reflects mine. The Vikings don’t look very good. Jared Allen looked great most of the afternoon, but according to the TV guys, the left tackle for the Vikes had allowed more sacks than any other left tackle in the NFL (I think they said ten sacks coming into yesterday’s game). And Robinson, the Vikes cornerback, looked like he was about 5′ 9″, so the Bears attacked him ALL day. If the Bears could just play some smaller weaker opponents every week, they could maybe go to the Superbowl. Additionally, the broken clock coupled with a rookie QB certainly helped to seal the win at the end.
I will, respectfully and not very vehemently, disagree with both you and the TV guys on the end of the first half play calls. First, the Bears took over at around their own 20 or 25 yard line with 1:45 or so in the half. They had the ball in an area of the field where a turnover from a batted pass interception, sack/fumble etc would have enabled the Vikings to kick a field goal. Equally, maybe even more importantly, the Bears knew that they would be receiving the kickoff in the second half, so if the clock ran out, the opportunity set would be the same within two minutes of game time (i.e. at the opening of the second half). If I remember correctly, on first down they called a running play to Forte that gained six or seven yards. It seems fair to me to fault them for not lining up more quickly for the second down play, but another run by Forte instead of a pass made sense. Once they had the first down and had moved the ball pretty much out of the Vikes field goal range, they opened things up–and what happened? As if on cue, our ProBowl QB threw his regularly scheduled interception. Given the time on the clock (which the earlier guarded-play-calling ran down considerably) and the field position, the Vikes just settled for a knee to end the half. Hence, the cautious play calling limited the damage to nothing.
As some guy on WSCR said, that was just a bad football game, though for a Bears fan it did not disappoint.
Something else happened yesterday that I felt was very encouraging for the Bears. Yesterday Green Bay made Philadelphia look almost as bad as they made the Bears look last week. Aaron Rodgers has now thrown 29 TD passes at Lambeau since he threw his last interception. First, maybe the Bears aren’t quite as bad as they have looked–that is not to say that the SuperBowl is in sight (I think that is WAAAAAY beyond Cutler’s potential), but the Bears probably can beat Tampa Bay, the Vikes in Minnesota, and maybe even win one against the Lions (wishful thinking???)
On the other hand, rather than frustrate myself and hate Aaron Rodgers, I enjoy watching the guy and admire and respect him–he truly is an elite QB, possibly the best current QB in the game. It is bothersome, but the two QBs over the past twenty years or so who really seemed to love playing the game and were fun to watch have been Favre and Rodgers. They both seem to play with the joy of middle school kids out on the street. Why can’t the Bears get somebody at QB who just wants to play for fun? Actually as I think about it, Jim McMahon was EXACTLY that buy, but some nitwit decided they wanted to trade him; McMahon was the true precursor to Favre and Rodgers!

BEAR DOWN baby! A win is a win is a win. You cannot get too excited because of it, but it is still a step in the right direction. Like the comment above, I think maybe gb and the pats are the 2 best teams in football right now…sorry arizona! So the Bears got smoked by both teams…definitely not on that level, but we can win some games the rest of the way, especially next week versus tb. With 2 games versus detroit and 1 more against minny on the schedule, the Bears can control 2nd place in the division and who knows what will come with that in this crazy nfl season! Keep winning…all the Bears can do, ugly or not, they really needed this one! BEAR DOWN!!!
