Well, it’s nice to get that first one out of the way. On Wednesday night, the Blackhawks finally won a game, the first with their new coach Jeremy Colliton. He needs a nickname, no? Coach Q was a good name; could he be Coach C? or how about Coach JC? To be determined…
After he took over, it has been more of the same from the Hawks. A loss to Carolina at home; they dug themselves a 4-0 hole and made a nice comeback, but still fell 4-3. A loss at Philly, that’s like a normal occurrence; this time the final was 4-0. Another loss this time at Carolina, but, but… the Hawks did earn their first point on the road that night, losing in OT 3-2; it sucked that their 1st two goals in regulation against us came on their power plays. Then came the 1-0 win over the Blues at the UC on Wednesday night. Hey, 3 out of 4 points in the last 2 games isn’t too bad.
Will he make a difference? I’m not as familiar with different game plans, sets, etc with hockey as I am in let’s say football or baseball. What different things can be done? I imagine there are plenty of different flavors of game plans to employ. One of these flavors needs to be around defense in our zone. When a guy has the puck right in front of our goalie, and there are 3 guys just looking at him, that’s a problem. Will he help solve that problem? What about our inconsistent offense? We may get hot for a couple games and score some goals; the big guys may carry us for a couple games here and there. But, overall, there is no consistency to the offense. How does that get solved? One thing could be an improved power play. I mean, my God, if we can’t do better on the power play… that’s been the one mystery with these Blackhawks over the years. With all that talent on offense… just too cute? Eddie O had a nice take on the power play the other day; just shoot the puck for God’s sake. It’s probably nothing different than most of us have been screaming at the TV the last few years.

What will the Colliton Effect be? Will he be able to make an impact, or does it come down to the talent on the ice at the end of the day? Crow can certainly be that guy to carry us, to stand on his head, to earn us a string of wins, but that’s not a long term solution. It’s nice to have a guy that’s able to do that, but… would the Hawks trade Crow to get back a haul? Besides Kane, he has to be the most valuable. Will we continue tearing this team down, or do we actually think we can make a run with this roster, now led by a brand new coach?
I’ve definitely soured on the Hawks after the coach Q firing; I’ll get over it. I’m just not convinced that we’re going to be able to do anything this year; easy to say now that they’ve lost a bunch in a row. We’ll see what happens. We have to give the guy a chance; it’s not his fault they fired Q. Personally though, I think there are more moves to come; I think it’s going to get worse before it gets better. What does Bowman have to lose at this point? Q is gone, yes, but next on the hot seat has to be him; many say it should have been him that went. With that seat warming, Bowman may get crazy, and try to move anybody and everybody to save his ass, and worst case, he’ll be gone anyways, so what does he care. Interested to see how this will all play out, and yes, I’ll still be watching. Go Hawks!

Coach Coll sounds good to me. What will his impact be and how soon before the Hawks take to it and we see it? All good questions with answers to come with time. Yes, the talent on the ice has to ultimately get the job done, but Coach Coll has to make some changes to the scheme. Defense should be a big one. Yes, Crow can stand on his head but not without help from the D. Power play should be another one. Too much talent to not score more goals with a man advantage. Shoot the damn puck is right. We have only been saying that every year for the last how many. Coach Q will be missed no doubt. Coach Coll will need some time to get things going. I think Bowman and the organization will give him half a year or so to see if this team is playoff worthy or not before making more moves. A tough 3 games to start his coaching career but finally a W! What does he get it for it other than the puck? A hot wild team at the UC…GO HAWKS!!!
