November 12, 2019: Mr. White

I was pissed on Tuesday night; our internet was down.  Call 911, sound the alarm, we need emergency help…  what did we ever do without the internet?  Alexa stopped playing Christmas music.  When I tried to turn on the Bulls game, it wouldn’t let me change channels.  All because the internet was down.  My wife got a message from our provider, and sure enough… outage in the area.  Perfect, just perfect.

Not a huge deal.  Started getting my son ready for bed; I was following the Bulls score on my phone.  Couldn’t use the wifi, but we have unlimited data, so it’s all good.  It was a close game… surely we wouldn’t lose to the Knicks again.  I was looking through the box score.  I wanted to see how Bobby Portis was doing.  He only had 1 bucket, the one he got a technical for in the first quarter before his shot at the end of the 3rd quarter.  Good.  Wendell on the other hand was having a very nice game.  I liked that he talked some crap before the game.  This dude is already becoming a vocal leader, which is a very good thing for our future.  Of course, he still needs to get better, and more consistent in his play on the court, but the fact that we appear to have a leader in the locker room, feels like a good accomplishment for these Bulls early in the season.  After all, who the hell is going to listen to Boylen?

I looked at Coby White’s numbers; he was putting up a goose egg.  What the heck?  I thought after the way he started the season like gangbusters with 17 and 25 points, he was on his way to rookie of the year; we were already crowning him.  Then he went on to average a little more than 6 points per game the next 5 games, before picking it up with 18, 10, and 10 in his last three.  Of course, he is a rookie, and he will be inconsistent.  But we did see flashes…  Goose egg through 3 quarters vs the Knicks at home?  Disappointing.

Then, it happened.  As I watched on my phone, Coby White makes 3 pointer, Coby White makes 3 pointer, Coby White makes 3 pointer; that was three in a row to start off the 4th quarter, propelling the Bulls ahead.  Then I kind of dozed off for a minute with my son.  When I finally got back up and checked my phone, I saw he did not stop.  Seven, count ’em, 7 three point buckets in the 4th quarter alone!  Here comes Mr. White!

Yes, there will be ups and downs with any rookie, especially a kid like Coby… 19 years old… he was born in the year 2000 for God’s sake!  But man, what an “up” this was.  Of course he’ll work on his consistency through the year, as well as other aspects of his game, like assists which are very low.  But I think it’s safe to say, that after seeing some early flashes, he is here to stay.  It was nice to see him do that in front of his college coach at UNC Roy Williams, who was in the house.  Can he come to every game?

While Lauri struggles, and we wonder if LaVine will ever be that superstar player, Wendell is leading and Coby is growing.  We have the makings of something… some kind of core… what kind of core, and when will it become a core that will lead us to the promised land, is anybody’s guess.  I thought this year would be playoffs, but after this start I feel deja vu; it’s the last 2 seasons all over again. Yet, after a game like this, a performance like this from our 19 year old rookie, a win at home, even if it is the Knicks, I feel hope. Let’s do some more of this winning stuff. Go Bulls!
