Now that the longest drought in American sports is over… that same drought that was the longest for Chicago sports teams, what’s next? The Cubs will be playing next year as defending champions. We are definitely living in a crazy world. But what about everybody else; let’s take a peek.
Nothing much to say about the Blackhawks here. With 3 Stanley Cups this decade, not sure we can ask for much more. Well, of course we can, like that Kings series for starters. But still, the Blackhawks continue to be a model franchise, with a good young core and a mastery of the salary cap, that has the team in position every year to be in that final series. This year is no different.
What about those White Sox? Yes, they still play baseball in this town. After all, it’s only been 11 years since they brought home the first baseball title to Chicago in eons. I didn’t forget, although some national outlets may have. It wasn’t a huge deal for me personally, but for the city, Chicago, heck yes. That definitely counts! When will they get back to the promised land is the next question. How will this offseason go? Will they shift to full rebuild or continue the strategy they’ve used over the past decade? Which one is better? Which one gives the Sox the better chance to win in 2017? Those last 2 may be different answers. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. With the Cubs finally winning a title, it’s now the race to #2 in most of our lifetimes. The Sox must do something to stay in that conversation.

After getting a chance to see MJ and the Bulls dynasty from the 90s, maybe we should just be content. Maybe we shouldn’t worry about winning any more than those 6 trophies we won back in the day. Well, just like I’m extremely happy the Cubs won, I still want another. So just because we experienced the best with the Bulls, doesn’t mean I don’t want to see another. The Bulls most recent window has closed; it started to with the firing of Thibs. Now, it feels like a transition period. They’re not really built to win a title now. They will be a good to average team that may win a playoff series… maybe two? That may be pushing it, but for now, there is no #7 on the horizon. I’m pretty confident to say the drought will be 19 years after it’s all said and done in this year’s NBA.
And now, the next drought in Chicago sports, the longest existing drought, belongs to our Chicago Bears. Once the Super Bowl is played in Houston this year, and the Bears are only involved as spectators, the drought will be 31 years. Three decades since the last Bears Super Bowl victory. It sounds like a lot now that the whole century thing is behind us. There have been some good Bears teams since then, including the teams directly after the Super Bowl win, and those Lovie teams, one of which marked our 2nd Super Bowl appearance. It feels like the roughest sledding has been as of late. The Trestman era is one to forget, although the Fox era is shaping up to be even worse after 2 years just going on win loss record. With 2016 hopefully being the last year of Cutler, I almost feel like we should start fresh everywhere… don’t even think that’s a possibility. But with Cutler gone, at least we can focus on getting the next great Bears QB, and no, I’m not saying Cutler was great.
So it’s DA Bears. They currently sit with the longest drought since the last championship. I guess at this point, now that I have my Cubs title, I’m up for anything, but it sure would be nice if the Bears won some time soon. But hey, maybe the Bears & Cutler have one more run in them this year… let’s talk about how that Sunday game went down… two words… not good.

Each of the last 4 decades has brought Chicago a championship…85 Bears, 91-93 & 96-98 Bulls, 05 sox, 10/13/15 Bhawks, and finally the 2016 World Series Champions Chicago Cubs! So 6 titles in the 90s thanks to MJ and the Bulls. Will that number be caught this decade? 4 titles already and the Bhawks and Cubs seem to be in position to add to that with a few years left. That would be pretty sweet! I do not see the Bulls, Bears, or sox contributing, but things can change in a hurry sometimes. The Bulls should be playoff contenders, but I cannot see much more than that. The Bears need a qb…what else is new? The sox started hot and fizzled out, but with a few moves, they can get back in the playoff picture, which is really all it takes. All in all, I have seen 12 titles across all Chicago teams in my 37 years…not too bad I guess. We were pretty spoiled by the Bulls and now the Bhawks. I hope the Cubs dont keep us waiting, either…how about repeating Cubbies??? Hell YES!
