November 11, 2019: Fantasy Football Leader

OK, stick with me on this one…  The Fantasy Football leader has an update.

Yes, that’s right.  I’m currently in 1st place in my “big money” league (big money=$50).  I wouldn’t be writing this if I was in last place… duh.  But it’s the way I finally got there… first place all by myself.  The week hung in the balance during Monday night’s 49ers and Seahawks classic back and forth battle.  Let’s review.

This week featured a matchup of the two teams tied for 1st place.  I actually saw the guy this week, and he talked about how I was going to smash him this week.  Maybe it was some gamesmanship, but I knew better.  I knew the projections don’t mean crap.  So although I was projected to win by 20 points, it meant nothing.  I did have some problems brewing on my roster…

George Kittle was questionable, and because he played on Monday night, that meant I needed to be prepared.  I dropped AJ “collecting dust on my roster” Green and picked up a WR from San Francisco, Deebo Samuel.  He would be my safety valve come Monday night.  But, as the week progressed, Kittle was now moved to doubtful.  OK, good.  I can make my roster adjustments now.  So I cut Samuel… you thought I won because of him, huh?  I would have had I kept him, but no… I looked to upgrade my defense for the week, choosing the Browns over the Panthers D, who were currently on my roster.  That move netted me -1 points on the week.  And oh yeah, I would need every single point…

The other important news came on Sunday morning; Stafford would not be playing.  When I tried to figure out who the backup QB would be, and because it took me so long to confirm, I knew he sucked.  But, they would be playing against my Bears, who I knew would try to make some backup look good.  Still, I thought Golladay would have a down game…  I had one option on my bench, AJ Brown.  With the top WR out in Tennessee and a matchup with the Chiefs defense in Tennessee…  I made the move.  It wasn’t before I checked in with one of my oldest friends… like 38 years and running type friends.  It’s the guy who ran our first fantasy football league way back when before the internet, using pen and paper to keep track of who won week to week based off the stats in the Sun Times for each game.  He had the same exact predicament as me, in our other league.  We agreed that it would make sense.  We both made the change.  Of course, this would cost me 12 points… like I said, every point would matter.  So now, based on my smarts, I was down -13 points on the week.  That lead to our matchup for the week needing to come down to Monday Night Football.

I was leading 161.90 to 153.70.  I had Tevin Coleman; he had Chris Carson.  I was checking my phone… monitoring the score.  It was close…  I knew as the game was winding down, I was in trouble.  He passed me in points eventually, and held the lead until the last 49er drive in regulation.  That’s when Tevin caught 3 passes for a bunch of yards which in our PPR league, gave me a solid 5 point lead.  As they lined up for the game tying field goal, I was rooting for a miss.  Of course, he made it.  Then I rooted for the 49ers to get the toss; they didn’t.  Carson started getting some more yards…  It really didn’t matter how many times San Francisco got the ball in OT because Coleman never made it back on the field.  WTF?!?!  If I was behind by a point, I would have been furious.  Instead, I patiently waited for this game to end… and it went on, and on, and on.  Carson chipped away… and instead of needing a TD to beat me, just needed another 10 yard reception.  He ran to get the Seahawks in FG position, and Wilson spiked the ball.  Final score:  173.10 to 171.80.  Whew!!!

I went to bed happy… of course I lost in my other league, another close game, where I had Coleman and they had the SF defense…  oh well.  This is the one that really counts, and instead of being under 500 and desperately trying to make the playoffs, I sit atop the league standings at 8-2 with 3 weeks to go.  Waiting, hoping for my first fantasy football championship since those paper and pen days…  OK, I’m done.  Thanks for reading.
