November 10, 2023: Thursday Night Triumph

posted in: Bears | 0

Well that’s putting a nice spin on it… The Bears remain undefeated… on Thursday Night Football… downing the Carolina Panthers in a barn burner 16-13. Great to win a close one, no doubt; great to push the Panthers down, improving our pick. I have to say, it WAS a Thursday Night Triumph.

The Panthers are bad… I mean, I thought we were bad, but Thursday night was an example of the saying “it can always be worse”… The Bears defense played like 85 with Samurai in the house. The Panthers only TD coming on a punt return; were you worried after that one? I wasn’t. For some reason, well, I think I know the reason, I felt like the Bears would win this one. Thankfully the Bears didn’t completely embarrass us. I really do thank them for that…

Tyson Bagent… why do I always want to call him Tyler? Is it only me? He didn’t mess up in this one, and that was enough. He made just enough throws to not waste this effort by the defense against this extremely pathetic offense. He managed the game. Where have we heard this before? Well, only our whole lives… most of them at least. He was an able game manager against Carolina, just like against Oakland; it wasn’t quite the same against the Chargers and Saints, but, hey, the kid is a kid. I’m not here to tell you he should start over Fields, but I am here to tell you that maybe we’ve got something with this kid; maybe he CAN be a backup for us. I’m sure he’ll eventually want more. Whether or not he can achieve that is yet to be seen, but… if we do stick with Justin after this year, we do need a serviceable backup; Justin has been known to get nicked up. Maybe we can get an OL around him that will limit that, but… with his ability to run the ball, there will always be that risk. So I think, we should all be happy about this development.

I’m ready for Fields to come back. With some extra days before our next game, I don’t think Eberflus will have to stumble through another presser; Justin should be back, and that’s a really good thing. What? You want to keep Tyler, I mean Tyson, starting? You already know Justin isn’t that guy? Well, I think it’s still an open case, and the rest of the season is the final evidence. Maybe the guys up top already know what they’re going to do; maybe not. Either way, not sure how many realistic wins remain on the table for us from here on out, but… to win more of these close games, against good teams… that will go a long way in prepping for NEXT year, which we all thought THIS year was going to be. While we remain patient, yet again, the Bears can learn to win, and then make that leap next year… I’ve been a year off before…

Hopefully that’s all it is; hopefully the Bears can double their win total from last year. Maybe we expected too much thinking this team would do more than that? Well, I’m sticking with my zero expectation strategy; I was very happy with the W over Carolina, just like I am with any Bears win. I’d like to see some more of these, unfortunately, we don’t play on Thursday night any more. It was fun while it lasted… Bear Down!
