So I started reading this new book: “If these walls could talk” written by Otis Wilson with Chet Coppock. So far so good, let me tell you. After reading one part, I had to do some further research.
They were talking about a specific game from 1984 vs the Raiders. The Raiders were the defending Super Bowl champs and they came into Soldier Field to play this Bears team. This Bears team with this defense that was just starting to dominate. They talked about this game being one of the most physical games either had witnessed or played in. I had to find out more.
I called my buddy from LA, die hard Raiders fan, and asked him about this game; it didn’t stick out to him… probably cause the Bears kicked their ass… haha. OK, next up was YouTube. Gotta love YouTube… punched in Bears Raiders 1984, and there it was. I watched a 20 minute clip of the game, and it was everything I thought it would be.
Nobody talks a lot about 1984. Everybody knows about 1985. In fact, I could playback highlights from most of those games to this day. I went out and purchased a DVD set of each game for God’s sake. But 1984… not so much. I remember the playoff loss to the Niners… I barely even remember the win against the Skins. Yeah, I think this is the start of something. I did the game by game review of the 1985 games; I think 1984 may be up next. After all, next year it will be 35 years since then…

It was a knockdown, drag ’em out affair. There were multiple times where both Raider QBs were on the ground writhing in pain. We knocked out their starter, then their backup, then the starter came back in. Their 3rd QB was HOF Punter Ray Guy; I’m sure he was hiding… haha. But they did do damage to our QB as well. McMahon got smacked on a scramble… story was he was pissing blood; he got his kidney lacerated, and would miss the rest of the season. Didn’t know all that; you see, there’s a lot of 1984 I need to get up on.
It’s fun looking back on these games… seeing the all time great Bears again. I hate how some folks get tired of hearing about the 85 Bears; maybe these folks never saw them play. They deserve all that and then some from here to eternity; they were the best defense of all time.
It’s always fun looking back, especially when the current day Bears are doing well. There have been years where I’ve watched ’85 highlights just to distract myself from the train wreck that the current Bears team is. I’m glad this time around, this is not the case. I’m genuinely excited about Bears football again. I mean, I always am… always watch the games… always root for Da Bears, but when they’re good… yeah, it’s a different type of feeling in this city. And no, we don’t have to sit here and compare Bears teams, although that’s what we do; there will never be another team like that one… that doesn’t mean there can’t be another great Bears team in their own right; hopefully we’re just starting to see them come together. Throwbacks! Looking back in time at all of the great Chicago teams never gets old. The 90s Bulls and anything MJ. The Blackhawks and their 3 Cups. The Cubs and their most recent 2016 title. And of course, the one I was only 6 years old for, the 1985 Chicago Bears! Seeing all of the highlights from that year and players who were just dominating at their positions, not to mention the Super Bowl Shuffle, makes me want the Bears to get back there and win it that much more. No doubt that there will never be another team like them. The best defense ever to go along with the best running back ever. So glad that the current Bears are in first place and relevant right now. Football just isn’t the same when they suck. This may not be that super bowl season, but it seems that the pieces are in place. I am more than ready whenever that time will come because the Bears are due. No reason why this season cannot be a huge stepping stone for these young Bears. I am excited! Beat up on the bills and stay in first! BEAR DOWN!!!
